Research Notes

Source Leads

  • Family Tree-based Sites, with Possible Sources: Gurganus, Ray. "Our Family Tree" - note: Gurganus is the founder of Our Family Tree. This note lacks specificity.
  • See also: The following source, which provides a pedigree for son William Whitfield who married Elizabeth Goodman. It describes the Whitfield family as having Lancashire origins, but provides no sources. Hathaway, James Robert Bent, editor. The North Carolina Historical and Genealogical Register, Volume 1, p. 567/8.

Birth

It should be noted that the 14 Jun 1761 death date from FindAGrave is an unexpected date, and is unsourced. A correction request has been submitted.

Disputed Parents

Some sites name Henry Whitfield (1597-1657) and Dorothy (Sheaffe) Whitfield (1601-1669) as his parents, though these parents are essentially unproven (presently attached on FindAGrave without a source).[5]

Disputed Origins

Essentially, his origins are disputed/unproven, except that at least one source does list a Matthew Whitfield (circa 1607-84), landowner in Virginia and wife Ann just prior to the entry for this Matthew Whitfield (died 1708) proprietor and surveyor of North Carolina and Virginia and wife of Priscilla Lawrence.[8]

Migration

Migration Notes: Came over from England on the ship "Prosperous" in May, 1679. Settled as a landowner in Nansemond Co., Va. and in 1713 in Gates Co., N.C. but probably lived in Virginia. He and his wife had 4 sons and 6 daughters.[citation needed] This narrative, except for the migration date, seems to be conflated with the history of his son, William Whitfield.

Children

A child named Benjamin may be of this family, but no further proof has emerged.[7]

In 1721 a John and Samuel Smith appear in Chowan County Tax list. They were not there is 1717 suggesting they Samuel were not old enough to be on the list in 1717. This would suggest that William Whitefield followed John Smith his brother in law to Chowan and not the other way around. It also places Samuel's birth to 1704.

A William and John Hunnicutt later appear on Major Smith's grant as chain carriers. William Hunnicutt later sold land to Samuel Smith in 1762 in Cumberland. There stepmother was Leah-Killingsworth Smith who was the 2nd wife of their father Augustine Hunnicutt who lived in modern Halifax by 1738. Leah was the daughter of Nicholas Smith and a granddaughter of Richard Smith of Surry. Her brother was James Smith who may be the same James Smith on this tax list. He is mentioned in her estate division.

William Killingsworth was her 1st husband , he originally lived in Surry with his father William before moving to Bertie County and later to Halifax. John Killingsworth his brother was married to Rachel Hunnicutt ( who was the sister of her 2nd husband Augustine ) William's uncle was Richard Killingworth of Bertie County. Richard of Bertie also had a son named Richard when he died in Bertie. His cousin Richard the son of William ( also Leah but not mentioned ) was made his Admin. Thus proving the connection to Bertie County.

Leah Smith had two sisters who married Bryant's William and Arthur in Halifax they are mentioned in her brother Drew Smith's will. Arthur named a son Arthur Needham which suggests relationship to Needham Bryant of Bertie ( likely his brother John ) the same family William Whitfield 2nd married into.

I would also suggest that John and Samuel may be related to Nicholas Smith. Maybe son's of one of his brothers . His father's will states that Nicholas had two brothers one named Richard in Brunswick and another named Thomas in the Isle of Wight. Either of these men could be their father. His sister Elizabeth Sessums- Boone had already moved to Weecaunse Creek, Chowan County, North Carolina before 1711. A Thomas Smith appears in the record of James Millikan the Indian Trader in the 1720s as a witness . Another witness is William Whitfield. There is no record of this Thomas living in NC. but VA. He is possibly there brother or father.

In the name of God Amen. I [ARTHUR] NEEDHAM BRYANT of Halifax County North Carolina being infirm of body and knowing that I must ere long depart this life do there for a while in my proper senses and memory make ordain this my last will and testament in the following manner. IMPRIMIS I give my soul into the hands of almighty God who made it and my mortal body to be committed to the grave at the discretion of my executor Hereafter mentioned. ITEM I give and bequeath to my loving wife MIMA BRYANT [JEMIMA DAFFIN BRYANT] my Sorrel mare which I bought at JAMES BRYANT’s sale as her own property for ever. ITEM I give and bequeath to my two children NANCY BRYANT and NICHOLAS BRYANT the remaining part of my estate which must be equally divided between them both and my desire is that you would purchase one negro man for them with the money that is owing to me. LASTLY I constitute and appoint my friend WILLIAM VAUGHAN, HENRY DAFFIN and ELIJAH DIXON joint executor of this my last will and testament. In witness whereof I have here on to set my hand and affixed my seal the eleventh day of February 1785. NEEDHAM BRYANT {seal, his mark} Witness DREW SMITH ELISHA DIXON [ARTHUR NEEDHAM BRYAN] [JEMIMA DAFFIN]

.Smith of Scotland Neck by Claiborne Thweatt Smith, Jr. M.D. (1976) shows Sarah & Mary (m Arthur Bryan) as sisters (Sarah m William Bryan), both daughters of "Nicholas Smith son of Richard of Surry Co. VA. d. 1713". Same book shows Nicholas as d "late 1743" citing will (lost) proved by John Shelley and Drew Smith on February 29, 1744. Drew Smith, executor, filed inventory on May 21, 1745. Chart on p 7 in book shows sons of Nicholas (siblings of Sarah and Mary) as Drew (Halifax will dtd 1762, m Elizabeth- surname unknown), James (c1720-1811; m Mary Edwards), and Arthur (1732-1789; m Anne Ruffin)

Update Francis Smith was the son of James Smith. He is mentioned in documents with his known children.

William was the son of Thomas Smith brother of Richard and Nicholas of Halifax .Thus John and Samuel are likely his brothers.

Which records belong to each of two different Matthew Whitfields?

Please send me a message if you have any other leads. An error message suggests information about his father may be associated with an WikiData item, but I have not been able to locate the referring page.
