Biography

This profile is part of the Ward Name Study.

William was born June 28, 1749, the son of Josiah and Deborah Sheffield Ward.

William married "Hannah Taft, of Mendon, of that vicinity, about 1778, and removed to Newfane, Vermont, which was organized as a town, May 17, 1774. In the records of that town, he is styled Captain, and subsequently, Colonel."

"He was chosen its first Representative to the Legislature, in 1780, and on the 7th of November in that year obtained a grant of a township adjoining to and East of Newfane, for which he was the head petitioner. From him it derives its name, having been chartered to him and others by the name of Wardsborough, on the same day it was granted."

"Of Col. WArd, but little more is known. The names of his chihldren are not on record at Newfane, although it is known that the two youngest were born there. It is said he died in Canada, at whit time unknown, where he went to procure a load of furs. His widow, Hannah, married Moses Joy, of Putney, Vermont, and died there, in February 1842, aged 86."

"The children of Col. Ward were:

1. Josiah, who is said to have resided at Chesterfield; perhaps Chesterfield, N.H. 2. Hiram, who married and supposed to have resided and died at Boston. 3. Chloe, born April 4, 1784, married Joseph Black. 4. Walter, who is said to have died unmarried at Troy, N.Y."

William married Hannah Taft on June 18, 1776, at Mendon, MA.

Walter, their youngest child, was baptized at Townshend, Vermont: "And Mrs. Fish's grandchild, son to Mr. William Ward Baptized by the name of Walter." September 9, 1792.
