Biography

This profile is part of the Ward Name Study.

William Ward's birth was recorded twice and at least one of the printed versions has an error.

22 Feb 1640. Sudbury Vital Records printed in NEHGR 17:170[1]
22 Feb 1640 in Sudbury is recorded in the Newton Vital Records top of page 204.[2] All of William Senior's children were recorded in Newton, including the children born in England. It is obvious from an analysis of the printed record, that they were all recorded together at one time.
22 Feb 1648 according to the printed Sudbury Vital Records, p. 148[3]
22 Feb 1640 was listed by Andrew Ward in his Ward Family ... p. 2. This predates any of the printed versions, so he must have gotten it from the original records. [4]
22 Feb 1640 In the History of Marlborough published 1862[5]
  • The text of William Sr's will leans towards William being older than his brother Samuel. The timing of William being born in 1648 between Hopestill 1647 and Eleazer 1649 makes a tight fit.
  • One thing that leans towards the later birth of 1648 is the fact that he was almost 40 when he married in 1679. There are plenty of reasons this might have occured.
  • He and some of his brothers took the freemen's oath in 1690, so that's no indication. Land records could be checked to see when he owned land.

Conclusion: 1640. All of the sources listed except the printed vital records of Sudbury (1903) have 1640.

Notes for WILLIAM WARD:
Ward Gen
CAG, Vol. VII, p 678 has his wife as Hannah (JOHNSON) EAMES, 1676-1720, dau. of Sol. JOHNSON. His wife had two children by her first husband Gershom Eames. The younger, Mary, of posthumous birth, married Major John Keyes, who was frequently associated with Nahum Ward (WW90) in Shrewsbury affairs, both in township business and in land and other transactions. William Ward, pages 51, 55, and 56 of chapters IX and X. ("The William Ward Genealogy", 1925, p. 73).
The family lived south of the first meeting house in Marlborough . Their home and property was originally a part of his father's estate but was separated from it when he married as a reward for his remaining at home to care for his father's property, even the house was split in two and William Jr's section moved westerly to be on his property, a newly erected barn already there. They were the parents of the following children: [1] William Ward born 27 May 1680 married a Jane [2] Bethiah Ward born about 1683 married Elnathan Brigham [3] Nahum Ward born 6 Dec. 1684 married Martha Howe. They were the parents of [3-1] Nahum Ward born 29 Mar. 1713 [3-2] Benjamin Ward born 19 Apr. 1716 [3-3] Persis Ward born 15 Apr. 1718 [3-4] Ithmar Ward born 28 Dec. 1721 [3-5] Martha Ward born 19 Dec. 1724. [3-6] Artemas Ward born 26 Nov. 1727.
Artemas Ward was the first commanding general of the Continental Army by reason of his position as General of the MA Militia, he was superceded by George Washington. Artemus was a heavy set, pious-looking Massachusetts farmer, storekeeper, justice of the peace, veteran of the French and Indian War who had over-all command of the siege of Boston prior to Washington's arrival at Boston. He was considered "a good man, a thorough New England man "A quote attributed to George Washington relative to Artemus is as follows " Oh! Please send me some competent leaders. We need no more like the fat, gouty Artemus who can barely sit astride his horse." Major General Charles Lee (a professional soldier and Washington's second in command) privately called Artemus a "fat, old Church warden" with "no acquaintance whatever with military matters". However he was given the honor of leading the troops into Boston following the retreat of the British from that city. He assigned Genral Knox the duty of planning and building fortifications to protect Boston from recapture by the British. He remained at Boston for the remainder of the Revolution protecting the New England States from any further, foreign incursions.
[3-7] Elisha Ward born 30 Aug. 1733 [4] Elisha Ward born 12 Jan. 1686 was killed or taken captive by the Indians during Aug. of 1709 while riding Post from Marlborough to Hadley (his mother's will made in 1714 stated that "if Elisha shall ever come again, my Ex'r shall pay him twenty shillings also." He never returned. [5] Bathsheba Ward born 16 May 1689 died 6 Oct. 1693 and [6] Gershom Ward born 3 Jan. 1693 was a representative for Marlborough, he died unmarried on 24 Nov. 1739.

Ward-10575 and Ward-118 appear to represent the same person because: comparing the information in both biographies, the Ward-10575 is referring to a different version of the William Ward Genealogy, not the current version. Dates are different, based on the references used, which is no longer available. Wife was mentioned as Hannah Johnson, but current information has Hannah Brigham, so those profiles will also be proposed for merge. same death date in both profile. common siblings mentioned in Ward-10575 have previously been merged with siblings of Ward-118.
I understand the difference in the birth year. I get it. However, why is the birth month different? There are source citations that list the birth month as January. Yet in the biography, there is an argument being made for February. Can we please get this sorted out?
