When Ellen was about 3 or 4yrs old she saved the life of her little playmate, who had fallen into the water between the frame and dome of the gasworks, by hanging on to her clothing and screaming for help. It can be seen that she made an early start at being a resourceful and quick thinking person.

Ellen inherited some of her mothers impatience, but also her fathers practical and skillful talents. When they had been living at Puketui for about two years and Ellen was 14yrs old, her mother had twins. Her father was away in the gumfields at the time. One of her brothers was sent to fetch a woman who could act as midwife. After running 3 miles, 12yr old John found she was not at home, and had to go and find her in Riverhead. Eight year old William was given his small sister Mabel to take for a walk to find his Father. In the meantime, before any one ariived back, Ellen had carried out her Mothers instructions and had delivered the babies, the babies were premature and died a few hours later. Quite an ordeal for a 14yr old.
