Biography

Mary was born about 1730. She is first found in the record in several land grants in Anson county North Carolina in the early 1750s. On September 14, 1754, she and Jacob Kuykendall appear on 2 grants, which were later sold in 1775 and 1778.[1] On the original grant, she is referred to as Mary Kuykendall. On the sale of the land 20 years later she is referred to as Mary Armstrong, and as the wife of Martin Armstrong. Jacob Kuykendall is still living at the time of the sale, and also appears on this record.

On March 26, 1755, Mary Kuykendall received two grants in Anson North Carolina. She appears alone on these grants as Mary Kuykendall. This land was later sold in 1763, where she is referred to as Mary Armstrong "...who formerly went by the name of Kuykendall" along with her husband Martin Armstrong.[2]

It is possible she was the same Mary previously married to a Mathew Kuykendall. Mathew received a land grant in 1751, and he and his wife Mary sold this land in 1754.[3] It is thought by some that this Mathew Kuykendall is the same individual as Mathew Kuykendall born 1690, and who died in 1754. This does make sense with the timeline of Mary's grants that were in her name in 1755.

There is a theory that Mathew's second spouse was Maretie Westvaal and also the same individual as this profile. However, the dates and ages of these individuals do not seem to be supportive of this theory. A detailed discussion of this theory and its problems can be found on the profile for spouse to this profile, Martin Armstrong. More research is needed before any definitive conclusions can be made as to Mary's identity.

It is possible that Mary is the individual who appears in land deeds in Rutherford county North Carolina in 1800 and 1801.[4][5] Her date of death is estimated as after the date of these two deeds.
