Biography

I am a genealogist hobbyist. I have no professional training but understand the importance of source based conclusions and disclosure of all assumptions and speculations. I believe that it is important that this is a collaborative process, and that we descendants come to a common agreement on who our ancestors were and how they are related. This takes time patience and understanding, and adherence to the sources that indicate factual information.

I embrace the proposals of theories and hypothesizes, so long as they are disclosed as such and are corrected when errors are discovered.

My research is mainly focused on my direct line, though I do work laterally to siblings and cousins of my direct ancestors when I do deep dives into individual lines. As future wikitree users connect into these profiles, I am happy to let others manage the profiles of their direct ancestors.

I welcome all forms of discussion and collaboration, and above all, the importance of consensus. However, consensus is a two way street and in instances where there isn't collaboration, I will make changes and merges that are supported by sources. If a proposed merge is ignored for a month I will complete it, so please speak up if you disagree.

Jared, you and I have 174 common ancestors! I was working on the Carter line starting with my direct ancestors. I then received other requests for help with some "brick wall" Carter ancestors and started to find that the early Carter Ancestors on WikiTree were a jumbled mess (to put it bluntly).

I am a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, and enjoy that period in early American History. Many of the Carters were granted land after the war in undeveloped land that later became Kentucky, Georgia and further West. Your message to me mentioned DNA, so you may already be aware of this page: https://www.familytreedna.com/public/carter/default.aspx?section=yresults

I have researched several families of Carters from the DNA project. If you have a particular ancestor that you want researched, please let me know. If they are on WikiTree, give me their id or page for their profile, too.

Thank you for your comment and information. I will have to spend some time learning how to interpret the information on the Carter DNA link.

I appreciate your work on cleaning up the Carter line. I agree with your frank assessment.

My current research is in regards to Carter-39451 and Clayton-7529, and associated parents/dead ends. If you have time and desire to work on these individuals I would appreciate any help. I recently added to some of the work you have done on this family and plan to continue the pursuit!

Yes, this is the line that I am currently trying to investigate. There are so many Thomas Carters! I have merged some duplicates on the FamilySearch.org page to try to file a composite for Thomas, here: https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/details/K2NK-PGY

I was intrigued by the notion that he named his sons Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, like the Hebrew children in the fiery furnace of Babylon. I have found that he was also the father of Nicholas and Barnabus, who have duplicate profiles on WikiTree. You can use the "find" tab, and scroll down to pending merges on WikiTree. Then enter the name "Carter" and see the number of current pending merges that may help make the family easier to read, once the merges are completed. Tally-Ho!!

This is an ambitious project you are taking on and I’m happy to help figure it out. I’ve been studying this Carter line off and on for almost 20 years. At one point it was claimed that Shadrach, Abedengo, and Meshach were triplets. This doesn’t appear to be the current understanding. I have posted my current theories on the profiles for Carter-39451 and Clayton-7529. The 1820 and 1830 census records for Barnabus in Warrick Indiana are a née finding for me anc I think an important part of the puzzle.

I could use another set of eyes on Barnabus Carter, born 1701: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Carter-25476 (see my notes about Find A Grave)

It is important to get him correct before this merge is performed: https://www.wikitree.com/index.php?title=Special:MergePerson&user1_name=Carter-24928&user2_name=Carter-11851&action=compare

The first link is for Barnabus Carter born 1701 but the side by side comparison is for a Samuel Carter born 1730. I recognize those two profiles. Years ago my Carter line was connected into the Susannah Pipps Samuel. Are you thinking the 1701 Barnabas is the same as the 1730 Samuel or was that an error?

Hi Jared,

Congratulations on certifying to work on pre-1700 profiles!

It’s very important to read and understand the Help:Pre-1700 Profiles page. These profiles for deep ancestors are shared by many, and collaborating on them works best if we all follow the guidelines laid out on that page.

Primary sources should always be added to pre-1700 profiles at the time they are created. If you don't have a source for a pre-1700 profile, it would be best to ask for help in the G2G forum before creating the profile.
