Biography

Excerpt from Genealogy.com

"Catawba and Siouan families to the Gingaskin (Tribal Surname) reservation was reported by Lt. Governor Gooch, and these families had such surnames as Fisherman, Guy, Jeffries, Collins, Scott, Daniel, Stevens & Cross. These families joined (and intermarried with) a pre-established community of mixed white/Gingaskin Indian peoples who bore such surnames as Harmon, Webb, Bingham, Weeks, George, Driggers, Landrum, Jacobs, Carter, Pool, Lang, Francis & Moses. With the influx of Catawba, individuals on the reservation began adopting military titles such as 'Captain' and 'Major', a phenomenon which occurred at the same time among the reservated Catawba and the Pamunkey on their King William County reservation."

Robyn Deerchaser says: December 16, 2014 at 7:10 pm- " I know our family’s line on the Driggers side come from the Gingaskin Tribe, Emanuel Driggers, had two wives 1st was Francis, Gingaskin and the second wife was Elizabeth, he was given both children to raise and married them when old enough, a Powhatan tradition." (The Upper Mataponi, and Mataponi Tribes merged with The Powhatan Tribe at some point.)

Excerpt from The Upper Mataponi Tribe-

"About The Upper Mattaponi The Tribe resides close to the upper reaches of the Mattaponi River in present day King William County. Read more…

There is archeological evidence that an extensive Indian culture has existed in this region for thousands of years. Read more…

In 1608, Captain John Smith identified the village of Passaunkack at the location of the present day Upper Mattaponi. In 1676, the August Hermann Map shows several Indian houses along the Upper Mattaponi River directly at the location of the Upper Mattaponi people, identifying the region as Indian land.

The oldest surviving King William County records dated 1885 list non-reservated Indians bearing the surname Adams living in a settlement known as Adamstown. The name most likely originated with James Adams who served as an official interpreter between the British and Indians living in this area between 1702 to 1727.

The Adamstown band became officially known as the Upper Mattaponi Indian Tribe in 1921. [1]

Excerpts from Oh Susannah Blogspot -

On Frances Driggers-

" Then he went on, "See that woman over there called Francis? As I'm sure you noticed, I bought her as well. She will be your wife. Any children you produce will belong to me, however. That's how it works here."

"Emmanuel had ten children (3 adopted, 5 by Francis and two by Elizabeth a white woman he married in1661.) He purchased the freedom of his wife Francis and son James' and at least that of his adopted daughters, but not his son Thomas nor his eldest born daughter Ann who Pott sold to a white planter Pannell "to have and to hould the same with all her increase forever." There was also a son Edward who was sold away while at the age of three, I believe." "

How did you come to identifying her with the Accomac ? I don't see that referenced or discussed in the narrative. Thanks.
