John Harvey was born on 22 September 1830 at Lochcarron, Ross-shire, Scotland[1]. He was the fourth son of William Turnbull and Mary Harvey.
In 1841 he was living with his parents, William (a shepherd aged about 40) and Mary (about 35), and ten siblings - Robert (15) and George (15), both shepherds, James (14), Helen (13), Elizabeth (11), Alexander (8), Margaret (7), Stephana (5), William (3) and Thomas (1) at at Corivinie, Lochcarron, Ross-shire[2]. He was aged 10.
John Turnbull migrated from Scotland to United States.
The family emigrated to the United States in 1849 leaving from Glasgow[3]. They settled at Elmira, Stark, Illinois where his two uncles Robert and John had previously settled. In 1850 he was living with his parents, William (a farmer aged 53) and Mary (50), and his three unmarried siblings - Stephana (14), William (12) and Thomas (10), brother Robert (a farmer aged 28), his wife Betsey (aged 22) and their daughter Isabella J (4 months), and brother James (a farmer aged 25), his wife Ann (24) and their daughter also Isabella (5 months) at Stark, Stark, Illinois[4]. He was a farmer aged 19 and born in Scotland as was everyone except the two babies.
John married Mary Armstrong on 5 February 1858 at Stark, Illinois[5]. They had seven children.
In 1960 he was a farmer aged 29 living with his wife Mary (24) and daughter Margaret (1) at Branly, Bureau, Illinois[6]. His real estate was worth $350 and his personal estate $725.
By 1870 he had moved and was living with his wife Mary (keeping house aged 35), five children Margaret (11), Andrew O (9), Hannah E (7), Mary S (5) and Martha (2) - and Walter Armstrong (Mary's brother and a farmhand aged 22) at Stark, Stark, Illinois[7]. He was a farmer aged 39 with $1550 worth of real estate and $1440 of personal estate. Living next to him was his uncle John Turnbull (62) and his wife Margaret (53). In 1880 there were still five children at home - Andrew O (a farm labourer aged 18), Hannah E (doing housework aged 16), Mary S (14), Martha (12) and William N, all at school -
at Elmira, Stark, Illinois[8]. Charles Bowman (30) was also helping on the farm.
By 1900 all the surviving children had left home[9]. He was now 70, and Mary was 66. He had emigrated to the United States in 1849, and Mary in 1857.
His wife Mary died in 1908[10]. In 1910 he was a widower aged 79, still living at Elmira[11]. His grand-daughter Martha E (20) was living with him, no doubt looking after him.
