James Turnbull was born in Scotland.

James was born on 24 September 1824 at Aberlosk, Eskdalemuir, Dumfriesshire, Scotland[1][2]. He was the third son of William Turnbull and Mary Harvey.

His family moved soon after his birth from Eskdalemuir, Dumfriesshire to Lochcarron, Ross-shire. In 1841 he was living with his parents, William (a shepherd aged about 40) and Mary (about 35), and ten siblings - Robert (15) and George (15), both shepherds, Helen (13), Elizabeth (11), John (10), Alexander (8), Margaret (7), Stephana (5), William (3) and Thomas (1) at at Corivinie, Lochcarron, Ross-shire[3]. He was aged 14.

He living at Tullich married Ann Matheson living at Deriner Kintail on 12 February 1847 or 1848 at Lochcarron, Ross-shire[4][5]. They had ten children.

James Turnbull migrated from Scotland to United States.

The family emigrated to the United States in 1849 leaving from Glasgow[7]. They settled at Elmira, Stark, Illinois where his two uncles Robert and John had previously settled. In 1850 he was living with his wife Ann (24) and their daughter Isabella (5 months), his parents, William (a farmer aged 53) and Mary (50), and his four unmarried siblings - John (a farmer aged 19), Stephana (14), William (12) and Thomas 10), and his brother Robert (a farmer aged 28), his wife Betsey (aged 22) and their daughter Isabella J (4 months) at Stark, Stark, Illinois [8]. He was a farmer aged 25 and born in Scotland as was everyone except the two babies.

In 1860 he was living with his wife Ann (33) and children - William M (13), Isabella (11), Mary (9), Flora (7), John M (5), Ellen (3) and Sarah (8 months)[9]. He was a farmer aged 33 with real estate worth $1600 and personal estate worth $500. His brothers Robert and William were farming near by.

James died on 10 November 1905 at Elmira, and was buried in Elmira Cemetery, Elmira, Stark County, Illinois[10].
