There are significant uncertainties about whether Thomas, the son of martyr Rowland Taylor, was husband of Elizabeth Burwell and father of Thomas. Other poorly evidenced relationships can be found in trees and privately-produced family histories on the internet. See Research Notes below. If you are able to supply well-sourced evidence which casts light on Thomas's family relationships, please place a comment on this page.

Biography

Thomas was the son of Rowland Taylor, the Marian martyr, and his wife Margaret. Foxe's Book of Martyrs states that he was alive at his father's death on 9 February 1555 and old enough then to sup with his father a few days earlier and to be given advice as to his future conduct and a Latin book of sayings of the early Christian martyrs.[1]

Thomas Taylor married about 1572 in Carlisle, Cumberland, England to Elizabeth Burwell.

He died on 01 Oct 1588 Hadleigh, Suffolk, England and was buried at Hadleigh Cemetary.

Research Notes

No firmly-sourced information has been found for Thomas's life after the martyrdom of his father.

Family Relationships

Ann Cotton

Ann Cotton has previously been shown as a wife of Thomas. This relationship is found in some unsourced trees on the internet, but there is no reliable evidence for it. She was detached after a discussion in G2G in December 2019.

Elizabeth Burwell and son Thomas

Elizabeth Burwell is shown as wife of Thomas, with them marrying in 1572 and having a son Thomas. These relationships are found in unsourced trees on the web, with a marriage place of Carlisle or London, and (without any good sourcing) in two privately produced family histories available on the web: one by William Taylor Wittel (dated 2000)[2] and the other by E Stuart Gregg (dated 1975).[3] Both of those works have substantial errors for martyr Rowland Taylor and his family.

There appears to be no reliable evidence for these relationships.

Nathaniel, James and Edmund

Three previously-shown children have been detached after the same discussion in G2G:

  • James Taylor and Edmund Taylor, who were shown as sons of Thomas and Elizabeth Burwell - though the text in the biography section of his profile has simultaneously given Edmund’s mother as Ann Cotton (as at 9 December 2019). William Taylor Wittel's family history work lists them as sons of Thomas and Elizabeth, without any supporting evidence[2] and this has been replicated in some unsourced trees on the internet. No good source has been found for Thomas having sons called James and Edmund.
  • Nathaniel Taylor, shown as son of Thomas and Ann Cotton. This relationship is found in some unsourced family trees on the internet. The same inaccurate family history by William Taylor Wittel gives Nathaniel as son of Thomas and Elizabeth Burwell.[2] There is no reliable evidence for Nathaniel being a son of Thomas.

Birth and Death Information

No reliable source has been found for Thomas's birth and death dates and places, though Hadleigh, Suffolk as a birth place is quite possible as his father was rector there.

What concerns me is not whether Elzabeth Burwell was mother of Taylor-1062, but whether the Thomas of this profile was father of Taylor-1062 and husband of Elizabeth. I won’t repeat the exchanges we have had on Taylor-1062's profile beyond saying that at present it seems self-evident that the relationships are at best uncertain and appear to have no good sourcing.

Sources are cited in the profile for Taylor-1062 (at least in regard to Burwell-25 and Taylor-1062), so I think it would be best to leave this entry as is. One may not "like" those sources, but they may well be as accurate as any other.

At the moment there seems to be no good evidence for Thomas Taylor son of the martyr Rowland Taylor marrying either of the wives currently shown, or being father of any of the children currently shown. I have asked a question in G2G: unless anyone comes up with a respectable source in response, I am minded to sever the relationships and add research notes to relevant profiles.

Taylor-1059 and Taylor-19488 appear to represent the same person because: My mistake earlier - these are the two profiles that seem to match.
