Biography

Mary (Sweet) Hamilton is estimated to have been born abt 1725 in Lessudden, Roxburghshire to John Sweet and Mary Robson.[1]

Mary married George Hamilton (~1722 - ) on 1 March 1751 in St Boswells, Roxburghshire. It should be noted that her husbands name is given as Hamiltoun in the marriage record and the birth records for the children are all Hamiltoun also[2]

Their children are:

  1. Ann Hamiltoun born 6 May 1753 at St Boswells[3]
  2. William Hamiltoun born 16 April 1759 at St Boswells[4]
  3. Hellen Hamiltoun born 22 February 1761 at St Boswells[5]
  4. John Hamiltoun born 4 July 1762 at St Boswells[6]

Research Note

The birth location had originally been given as Leusseudon, St Boswells. This was changed to the correct spelling of Lessudden.

Lessudden was a medieval village. The village was burned to the ground in both 1544 and 1545 by the English. Previously it had been a place of considerable strength containing 16 Bastle Houses.[7] A Bastle House, sometimes referred to as Bastille Houses were a type of fortified farmhouse which were found along the Anglo-Scottish Border that experienced incursions by the Border Reivers.[8]. Lessudden today is referred to as St Boswells.
