Biography

George was born in Lothbeg , Sutherland shire, Scotland on the 16 Nov 1830. He is listed on the census of 1851 as being a scholar.

In the weeks before leaving Scotland, George along with brothers William and Alexander married in Clyne. George married Mary Bannerman from Lothmore daughter of Dugald Bannerman and Mary Wilson.

George and Mary travelled on the Wanata along with members of the extended Sutherland family of John Angus and Mary Ann. On the Passenger Register George is listed as an agricultural laborer. On arrival in Melbourne George was 22 and able to read and write He was protestant and of good character.

It is believed that initially that George and Mary lived in Richmond, Melbourne where the remainder of the family settled until leaving for Wallan Wallan. Here George worked with his father and brothers. On the Parish map of Wallan is mentioned G. Sutherland as selector and owned of Portion 56 consisting of 144 acres. The Quinns grandparents of Ned Kelly were Neighbours.

George had a family of eight children John( 1854-1908), Dugald ( 1857-1918), Angusena ( 1859-1930) and Mary Ann ( 1859-1921), Georgina ( 1961-1946), Jane ( 1863-1922) , Charles ( 1866-1876)( 1869-1948) and Christopher.

Mary died , as the result of childbirth in 1869 aged 40, two weeks after the birth of Christopher.

After the death of Mary, in 1874 George applied for a llicence under the land Act 1869 to occupy allotment 8 Section E1 in the Parish of Euroa, Couny of Delatite In 1877 George also listed as a carpenter completed building his family home. It was here that George employed Mrs Ferguson to housekeep and care for his young family. George continued to apply for and buy land

He passed away ion the 9/7/1905 Euroa at the age of 75 years. The Rev Angus McDonald a Presbyterian Minister conducted the graveside burial at the Euroa cemetery. George was buried in same grave as wife Mary and children Dugald Charles and Georgina.

George had been a colonist for 53 years
