Minneva Stewart was born February 14, 1867, at Blue Island, Shelburne County, Nova Scotia, and was the daughter of William Stuart and his wife Ann Williams. Her father was a fisherman, and they lived at Blue Island, Shelburne County. (Blue Island was included in the Ragged Island census.)[1][2] (Note - Given her parents' ages, there is a possibility that she was adopted, but there are no official records to confirm this. Ann Stuart was 50 years old when Minerva was born.)
In 1891, Minneva was living with Margaret P. Acker in Churchover,[3] along with Margaret's children, Allister, Ira, Dora, Rierson, and Elden. Soon after, Allister and Ira were living in Somerville, MA, as was Minneva's future husband Alonzo (Margaret's nephew). [4]
On September 21, 1896, Minneva married Alonzo Wells Acker at Somerville, Massachusetts. He was the son of Lucretia Acker, born in 1873 at Birchtown. [5][6] They returned to Nova Scotia[7], and had two children:
Alonzo passed away about 1906 (burial details unknown)[16]. Minneva did not remarry, but lived at Birchtown with Uzena and Loren[17]. She passed away on Febuary 10, 1922[18], and was buried at the Mizpah Cemetery in Birchtown[19][20].
Some researchers suggest that Minneva Stuart had two children before she married Alonzo[21][22]. Annie May Stuart and Alberta Stuart list Minnie Stewart as their mother, but this is speculative as records haven't yet confirmed whether they are children of THIS Minnie Stewart. However, since Blue Island people had strong connection to their relatives in Sandy Point/Jordan Bay, it was common for relatives to provide home for orphan children or children of single mothers.
Annie May Stuart was born at Green Harbour about 1882. She married Daniel Peterson on April 14, 1900, and listed Minnie Stuart as her mother.[23][24](Her name has some variation, recorded as Mary Ann or Mary Ann Mae in some records, but that is the case with so many people's names.)
Alberta (Bertha) Iona Stuart was born at Lydgate (Green Harbour) about 1886 and died 1933. She married Melvin W. Turpin on June 14, 1908, and listed her parents as William and Minnie Stewart.[25][26] Her death certificate also lists Minnie Stewart as her mother.[27] The 1901 census does list "Iola B. Steward, age 15, born April 8, 1885, domestic, living with Angeline (Hipson) Peterson (widow of Alexander) and her sons Manley and Ira, in Jordan Bay. [28]And in 1891 there is a Bertha Stewart, age 6, listed as a "lodger" with the family of John William Jodry and Kezia Spidle in Lunenburg, though there is no clear connection from them to the Jordan Bay area.
