Biography

Joseph was a Friend (Quaker)

Joseph was the son of was born on 22 January 1666/7 (Quaker 11th month 1666).^[1][2]

On 23 March 1691 Joseph married Alice Harris, daughter of Joseph Harris of Sibford Ferris, Oxfordshire.^[3] They had ten children:

• Ann,^[3] born on 2 August (Quaker 6th month) 1693^[4][5]
• Jeremiah,^[3] born at Chipping Wycombe, Buckinghamshire on 15 June 1695^[6][7]
• Joseph,^[3] born on 18 April 1697 at Chipping Wycombe, Buckinghamshire^[8][9]
• Mary,^[3] born at Chipping Wycombe, Buckinghamshire on 17 July 1699^[10][11] died on 21 November 1701^[12][13]
• Rebecca,^[3] born on 12 June 1701,^[14][15] died on 12 September 1724 and was buried at Chipping Wycombe, Buckinghamshire on 16 September^[16][17]
• another Mary,^[3] born on 13 August 1704^[18][19]
• James,^[3] born on 17 July 1706^[20][21]

Joseph was an active Quaker in Upperside Monthly Meeting, Buckinghamshire. In 1699 he was a representative at London Quaker Yearly Meeting.^[3]

Joseph died on 26 February 1712/13 (Quaker 12th month 1712) and was buried at Chipping Wycombe, Buckinghamshire. His Quaker death and burial record describes him as a maltster.^[28][29][30]

Joseph's will was dated 25 February 1712/3 and proved on 30 March 1713. In it his last name is spelt Stevens, he describes himself as a maltster, and he names:^[25]

• his children Jeremiah, Anne, Rebecca, Mary, Elicia, Joseph, James, William, John
• his mother Ann
