Joseph was an active Quaker in Upperside Monthly Meeting, Buckinghamshire. In 1699 he was a representative at London Quaker Yearly Meeting.[3]
Joseph died on 26 February 1712/13 (Quaker 12th month 1712) and was buried at Chipping Wycombe, Buckinghamshire. His Quaker death and burial record describes him as a maltster.[28][29][30]
Joseph's will was dated 25 February 1712/3 and proved on 30 March 1713. In it his last name is spelt Stevens, he describes himself as a maltster, and he names:[25]
his wife Alice (appointed as one of the executors, along with two friends)
his children Jeremiah, Anne, Rebecca, Mary, Elicia, Joseph, James, William, John
his mother Ann
