Based on later Census entries Mary Smith was born about 1875. A search of FreeBMD shows only one birth registered for a Mary Jane Smith in the district of Ticehurst in the period 1875 to 1877[1]. She is the daughter of Joseph Smith and Mary Manktelow.
Mary Jane Smith was baptised with her sister Kate in the Parish of Wadhurst, Sussex, England on 26 August 1877[2]. Her father's occupation was given as Brick-maker.
In the 1881 English Census, the five year old Mary is living in a household with her parents, Joseph and Mary Smith, and siblings Kate and Charles, at 9 Crystal Square, Hastings, Sussex, England. Her father, Joseph, is employed as a Blacksmkth Journeyman[3].
In the 1891 English Census, the 15 year old Mary Smith, born Wadhurst, Sussex, is employed as a domestic servant in the household of Edward Catt, a Grocers assistant residing at 4 Alexandra Terrace, Hastings, Sussex, England[4].
In the 1901 English Census, Mary J Smith, 25 year old single Laundress, is living with her parents and three siblings, George aged 17, Flora aged 14, and Albert aged 12, at 6 Aldborough Road, Hastings, Sussex, England[5].
In the 1911 England Census, Mary Smith, 36 year old single Laundry worker, is living with her parents and siblings, William, George and Flora, and nephew Ernest Smith, at 41 Paynton Road, Hastings, Sussex, England[6].
