Charles lived with his parents and siblings in IN for his first 26 years. He came to KS probably with his family when they left IN in 1886. (The Sheriff seized the family’s IN farm by court injunction in 1886. Apparently the taxes had been raised to pay for development of schools in the county and they could not afford to pay them. Malissa’s obituary states the family came to KS in 1886.)
Nothing is known of his life in these years. See his wife's profile for later years.

DNA
We look for cousins who match our DNA. Not only is it fun to locate living cousins we didn't know about, but these cousins can help us confirm ancestral relations via shared DNA. For this confirming process to work well, both cousins need to be able to define the family tree branches that lead from themselves to their most recent common ancestor(s).
PATERNAL aDNA is CONFIRMED with a MyHeritageDNA match between three cousins inheriting from James Smith a triangulating segment, matching 36cM, 19.2K SNPs on chromosome 2, thus confirming all descendant chains, as follows:
James Smith->Francis Marion Smith->Charles Newton Smith->James Smith->WS
James Smith->Mary Ann Smith->Clara Ellen Amena () Craig->Elsie Opal Porter->Dale K. Fewell->VF (DNA estimated relation to WS is 3C-4C; actual relation 2C1R)
James Smith->Henry Jackson (hidden paternity)->Harry Jackson->Golda (Jackson) Dunwoodie->RD (DNA estimated relation WS is 2C-2C1R; actual relation 2C).
MATERNAL aDNA is CONFIRMED with a 23andMe test match between cousins William Kincaid and WS, determined to be third cousins;
Predicted relationship from 23andMe is "3rd to 5th Cousin based on 29cM shared across 2 segments." (This is likely the minimal possible DNA overlap for direct 1-1 comparison; we would prefer further confirmation.)
The MRCA of WS and WK is (Hiram Harris+Martha Harris); lines of descent:
MRCA->Martha J. Raybourn->Sarah Kincaid->Enoch K->WK.
MRCA->Malissa Ann Smith->Charles Newton S->James S->WS
PATERNAL aDNA is further established with a 23andMe test between cousins SZ and WS, determined to be 3C1R.
Predicted by 23andMe to be "third to fourth cousins with 75cM shared across 4 segments".
The MRCA of WS and SZ is (Hiram Harris+Martha Harris):
MRCA ->Martha J. Raybourn -> Enoch R. -> Carter R. -> Larry Lee R. -> SZ.
The above three-way match, WS-WK-SZ, triangulates (WK and SZ also match each other) on chromosome 3 at positions 11.2-22.3, segment length 14.2cM and 2.5K SNPs, meeting all Wikitree published requirements for DNA-Confirmation of Charles' paternal relation.
Y-DNA haplogroup is I-BY66988, based on:
FTDNA/SMGF testing of 41 STR markers for grandson Weldon Smith.
Big-Y testing by two close relatives with (0/25) STR difference from Weldon, both assigned terminal SNP I-BY66988.
Weldon then tested BY66988+ at YSEQ.

It may be possible to confirm family relationships.
Paternal line Y-chromosome DNA test-takers:
I see that you changed his relationship to his father back to 'confirmed with DNA' without making any changes to the incomplete information I referred to when I left the comment for you on 19 April 2022. I'm now changing it back to 'confident' again.
If you don't understand, please let me know, and I would be glad to explain further. But please don't just ignore the information I've provided.
Have you tried the DNA Confirmation Citation Maker? I think you will find it to be very straightforward, and using it will help you to make sure that your DNA confirmation statements include all the required information, and you will be certain which profiles can have parental relationships marked 'confirmed with DNA' based on appropriate matches.
There are three DNA confirmation statements on this profile. The first one says it confirms the paternal relationship, but it actually confirms Charles' relationship to his mother, not his father. The second and third appear to rely on matches of test takers more distant than 3rd cousin, and require triangulation. I've changed his relationship to his father to 'confident'.
Please add information about William Kincaid's 23andMe DNA test to his WikiTree profile. That will allow his test information to display on this profile, supporting your DNA confirmation statement.
