Biography

Carrie May moved from IA with her family sometime between 1877 and 1880, when the family began farming a homestead in Allen Twp, Jewell, KS. She was living with the family as a schoolgirl in 1880^[1].

Her father died in 1884 and she married Charles on 8 Sept 1886, apparently just a few months after his arrival in KS. He was 26, she 16. We don’t know how the couple came to meet.

It appears that Charles and Carrie May then lived on the Jackson homestead; William George Jackson had died 2 years prior in 1884, and Carrie May’s mother Martha Eliza apparently then moved into town at Randall to live.

We know little about this family for the next 45 years, except the dates of their 7 children’s births.

They farmed in Jewell, Kansas; Charles retired in 1926, perhaps due to poor health. It also appears he left the family soon after that time and spent his last years living with his eldest daughter Grace. In his obituary, it remarks that he lived in Jewell except for five years when he lived in Sheridan Co. KS. It also remarks that he had been in feeble health during his later years.

Youngest son Howard stayed on at the family homestead and helped support his mother Carrie May until her death. She eventually became an invalid, probably due to diabetes, and at the end required amputation of her leg, an operation she didn’t survive.
