Before making her mark in the art library sector, Heather Slania's ingenuity and artistic flair shone brightly on "Crafters: Coast-to-Coast." Here, she captivated audiences with her tutorial on crafting a secret compartment box, blending utility with creativity.
Early Years in Rolling Meadows
Growing up in Rolling Meadows, Heather was engaged in diverse artistic activities. She started dance lessons at age three and played the violin in high school orchestras, including a three-week European tour. Her involvement in theater focused on makeup and acting, and she co-directed a sketch comedy troupe in her senior year.
Academic and Professional Milestones: From Northwestern to MICA
Heather graduated from Northwestern University in 2000 with a B.S. in Speech, majoring in Performance Studies and Art Theory & Practice, focusing on Painting. Her path to librarianship began with a work-study position in a conservation lab. After moving to Washington, D.C., in 2005, she earned her M.L.S. from the University of Maryland in 2007, specializing in Archives, Records, and Information Management. Her career includes various roles in Special Collections Cataloging and library leadership, culminating in her current position at MICA. Heather has been an active member and leader in ARLIS/NA.
Personal Values and Interests
As a first-generation college student, Heather values diversity, equity, and inclusion, which she actively promotes professionally. She has been vegan since she was 19 and practiced yoga fairly intensely during her time in DC. Her early interests included dance and punk music, where she often spent time at venues like the Fireside Bowl.
Genealogical Interests
Heather's interest in genealogy was sparked by family artifacts, including a Kenyon family Bible and a book on Nathaniel Kenyon from her mother's side. On her father's side, the discovery of Polish printmaker Czeslaw Slania led to a deeper exploration of her Polish heritage. She has been most recently pleased to discover that the stories of indigenous ancestry are true, with ancestors from the Akwesasne tribe in upstate New York and Canada.
Future Goals
Looking ahead, Heather aims to travel more and continue her contributions to the library field, focusing on diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives. She also will continue to add and improve on WikiTree information.
