Biography

Robert Sinton was born about 1813 in Clarilelaw Muir, Parish of Bowden, Roxburghshire, Scotland, son of James Sinton (~1773 - 1855) and Margaret (Wilkie) Sinton (~1776 - 1859). [1] His occupation was 'a woolen factory worker, deceased, when son William married'.

His siblings were:

Robert married Jane Park (~1816 - 1896) on 21 September 1839 in Lilliesleaf, Roxburghshire[2]. It should be noted that while Family Search have Robert's surname as Sinton, the ScotlandsPeople Index provide his name as Linton. The image would need to be viewed to clarify what name is actually recorded on the record, although there is little doubt the name is Sinton Henderson-2297

In the 1841 Scotland Census Robert is said to be aged 25 years and employed as an Agricultural Labourer. He resides with his wife Jane (25) and child Mary (1) at Balers, Selkirk. Also in the household is Robert's mother in law Mary Redpath (60). It should be noted that the family name is recorded as "Lenton" on Ancestry and "Linton" on ScotlandsPeople[24].

In the 1851 Scotland Census Robert was said to be aged 35 years, born Bowden and employed as an Agricultural Labourer. He resided with his wife Jean (born Roxburgh) and children Mary (11 born Bowden); Margaret (9), James (7), Robert (4), Joseph (2) and Janet (8mths), all born Selkirk, at Ralees, Selkirkshire. Also in the household is Robert's mother in law Mary Redpath aged 75 years, born Greenlaw[25]. It should be noted that the entry on the record clearly states Robert aged 4 however he wasnt born until Dec 1852. Interestingly daughter Rachel would have been 4 in 1851 is not listed with the family. Henderson-2297

In the 1861 Scotland Census Robert is said to be aged 48 years and employed as a Labourer. He resides with his wife Jane (45) and children Joseph (12), Janet (10), Robert (8), Peter (5), John (2) and William (9mths) at Raelees private house, Selkirk[26].

In the 1871 Scotland Census Robert is said to be 55 years old and employed as an Agricultural Labourer. He resides with his wife Jane (55) and children Joseph (22), Robert (18), Peter (15), John (13) and William (10) at Hartwoodburn, Selkirk. Also in the household is his grandson James Sinton (7)[27].

Robert died on 11 October 1877 in Selkirk, Selkirkshire, Scotland, United Kingdom aged 65 years. His cause of death was given as Tetanus, parents shown as James SINTON farmer & Margaret WILKIE, both dec'd. His son Joseph was the informant as to the death[1]
