Biography

My father was always very keen to keep in touch with family. I recall as a very young child visiting his uncle & aunt in Toowoomba (the only thing I actually remember is that every time, Aunty would give my brother and me 20 cents each – we thought we were rich!). As a teen, I remember the annual visit to Aunty Isla in a nursing home in Victoria Point. And his cousin Don and family when we holidayed near where they lived. Dad didn’t have much opportunity to do any family history as such, but he kept lists.

In my teens, Dad was contacted by a distant relative who had been doing some family history research and was compiling a book. She asked if she could include our details in it, and would he like a copy? Yes please! When it finally arrived (several years later – I was in my 20s by then), I was poring over the lists of names at the back and I came across one that was vaguely familiar. I said to my then boyfriend (now husband) “Isn’t there a [name withheld for privacy] in your youth group?” (I had visited only once or twice by then.) “Does he have a sister … and a brother …?” “Yes” “Well I’m related to them.” They are my 3rd cousins-once-removed. Unfortunately, they weren’t interested in such things, as I have found that many people aren’t. But that book and my Dad’s lists have become the basis of my interest in family history. But I didn’t have time or opportunity to do anything more until recently.

It was only a few years ago when I discovered some family history websites on the internet that my interest was sparked again. Still not having much time, and no money to spend on such things, I found a few interesting facts but couldn’t “connect” with other people also interested in family history unless I paid the subscription. That’s why I was so excited to find Wikitree, and the possibility of connecting with family, and other like-minded people.

The thing that intrigued me most when I first started looking at my family history was the case of brothers marrying sisters. No, not incest, but two of the Dean boys marrying two of the Hayward girls. To make it even more interesting, the oldest Hayward girl married a Cole boy, but their oldest daughter married a third Dean brother. I’ve since found several other similar instances, and realised that with the small population in Australia, at a time when travel wasn’t as easy as it is now, this sort of thing was not uncommon. Gives new meaning to the question, “Has she got a sister?”

The other thing that really makes me curious, which I will never find out from an official record anywhere, is the why? Why did people move where they did? How did Grandma, who was born in Oakey and grew up in Surat, meet Grandad, born in Newmarket and later lived at Kilkivan?

So as not to leave my descendants wondering the same thing, I have written my story in a private file. I will not be making this information public, to protect my family’s privacy, however if you are related to me, I’d love to hear from you, get to know you and share more of my story with you.

Hi Wendy,

We're contacting you for the annual Australia Project membership checkin. We really appreciate your involvement in the Project in the last year. Thank you so much for all your help to improve Australian profiles on WikiTree.

Please could you reply to this message, or send me a private message to let us know if you'd like to stay on in the Project, and if you'd like to make any changes to the teams that you belong to. The teams are listed on Australia Project Teams.

If you've moved on to other things for the moment, that's absolutely fine. We'd appreciate if you'd let us know so that we can remove you from the membership list.

Over the past year, Australia Project members have been more active on Discord. We're finding it a fun way to communicate as a project. As you are already a member of the dedicated Australia Project server (WikiAustralia) where all our chat channels are located, we hope you'll join the chat! It's a great way to communicate with other members on your project team/s, or for any general questions. We're always happy to receive any ideas or suggestions that you have to make our project even better.

Looking forward to hearing from you!

The Australia Project Leadership Team ~ Gillian, Margaret and Veronica

Thanks Margaret & team,

I would like to stay in the project, and in my current teams. Still not much time for Wikitree, rather, in the midst of Family History in the making, if you get my drift. But love seeing what others are doing in the project, learning more about Wikitree (learnt another useful category last week), and contributing to a profile or two when I get a chance. Wendy

Hi Wendy,

It's time for the annual Australia Project membership checkin. Thank you so much for contributing to the project and Australian profiles on WikiTree during the last year. We really appreciate you!

If you would like to stay in the project, please reply to this message or send me a private message to let us know that you would like to stay on. Alternatively, if your WikiTree and research interests have moved away from Australia, please let us know and we can remove you from the membership list for the moment. You will, of course, be very welcome to rejoin the project down the track whenever you want to.

We are also keen to know if you want to make any changes to the team or teams that you want to focus on. Take a look on Australia Project Teams to see what teams there are to choose from. If you want to discuss this, or have any questions or suggestions about the Australia Project we'd love to hear your ideas.

Thanks for taking the time to get back to us!

Gillian, co-Leader, Australia Project

Hi Gillian, thanks for checking in. I am happy to stay in the Australia Project, and in my current team. However, I'm not very active in Wikitree at present due to other personal demands. I still check my emails every few days, but haven't had a chance to work much on profiles for a few months now. Hopefully shortly things will settle down and I will be able to resume some family history work.

hi Wendy, I've changed the date for the Ventura, i don't know why I made it the 16th as you told me 19th in your post, so I must have had a brain fade! Sorry about that, you should see the change on the profiles in a day or so. Cheers, Margaret
No worries Margaret, probably just a typo; very easy if you use the number pad. I made so many typos this morning that I decided I needed to have a break for a while. Thanks for making the change.

Hi Wendy! You can send a private message by going to the person's profile page and clicking on the little envelope icon next to the person's name, in the orange-yellow-green box. It's right underneath where it lists the person's children (if any).

Or, you can click the "Send a private message to So-And-So" link on the right-hand side of the page under the "Collaboration".

Were you wanting to get in touch with a Mentor? If so, I can pass on a message, or I can try to help if you like!  :)

I should have added...

You don't need to add a profile for him. He can sign on to WikiTree and create his own with a few clicks. If he sounds polite and knowledgeable you might wish to invite him to do so.

Hi Wendy!

It is up to you if you wish to respond to a non-member or not. If you do, I think it would be through your regular email. I've responded to many people and never had a problem.

If they shared information you could thank them. If they questioned you it's your choice what to share. Unless it's specifically what they asked about, relation doesn't matter much.... anyone can share information and collaborate on profiles.

I hope this is the type of insight you were looking for.

I'd be happy to help you as you get used to navigating WikiTree. It's never a bother and I enjoy doing it.

Hello Wendy,

How are you doing? Hope you're enjoying our site.

Our vision is to build a collaborative tree. Please make sure to look for duplicates on WikiTree before adding a profile. Having dates and locations attached to every person assists in our mission as well.

Feel free to check out How To Use WikiTree. It's a great step-by-step guide.

Also Help Index with links to topics you may have questions on. Don't forget our G2G Forum where many of our generous members help each other out.

And of course, I'm here to help in any way I’m able. Just ask!

Robert ~ WikiTree Mentor

You are now a member of the WikiTree Community. Please note we are trying to build one Collaborative Tree which means one profile per person. It is important to ensure no duplicates are entered as you add Profiles to WikiTree - if you have pre-1700's ancestors to add please read our Pre-1700 profiles info.

If you need any help getting started check out the help section from the menu, top right, or head over to the G2G forum and take a minute to introduce yourself in the Tree House. You might also want to check out the introductory WikiTree video that a member created.

We also have Mentors to help too. Regards, Nancy

I have very little genealogical experience, but I like the idea of a free tree and being able to collaborate with others to grow it.
