Biography

Victoria flag
Lauren (Salisbury) Thomson was born in Victoria, Australia
English flag
Lauren (Salisbury) Thomson has English ancestors.
Lauren (Salisbury) Thomson is a member of the Australia Project.

I’ve been researching my family history since 1990. It seems a waste to have so much information sitting in a software program on my computer. When I kick the bucket, no one will look for it there (I have scrapbooked a lot of it for my children and they will have that to keep). WikiTree is my way of sharing this information for generations to come.

I enjoy researching my family history online and using computers and over the years have written articles for various family history magazines and newsletters.

These days I try to give back to the genealogical community by being a volunteer at Find A Grave and enjoy visiting my local cemetery in Burwood, Victoria.

My wish would be to have more time to do everything that I want to do with my family history. Alas I must devote time to that work thing. That thing that gives me the $$ to be able to subscribe to Ancestry, FindMyPast, the Genealogical Society of Victoria, Society of Australian Genalogists, plus a few county societies in England.

Woohoo!

Hi Lauren,

Just a reminder that adding sources at the time of profile creation is a requiremnt for pre-1700 profiles.

Hello Lauren

Just a reminder that the connect a thon starts on Friday at midnight (Sydney time) for 72 hours - so thats until Monday at midnight. Please adjust start/finish times for other states.

Here is our team page which has lots of info - https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Super_Aussie_Genies_-_SAG_Challenge_Team

During the thon we can communicate in 2 ways - - via Discord - see the team page for how to connect. This is live chat. You can join the Super Aussie Genies channel or the Australia Thon Channel, or both! This is the best vehicle to learn from others. - via the G2G page. I've put this message on the page and sent it earlier today. If you didn't receive it, it's because you don't have the tag for 'SAG' or 'Australia'. Please add a tag so you receive future messages. You can ask questions on this page during the thon and any team members can answer. https://www.wikitree.com/g2g/1676667/calling-all-super-aussie-genies-for-january-2024-connect-thon

Hi Lauren,

We're contacting you for the annual Australia Project membership checkin. We really appreciate your involvement in the Project in the last year. Thank you so much for all your help to improve Australian profiles on WikiTree.

Please could you reply to this message, or send me a private message to let us know if you'd like to stay on in the Project, and if you'd like to make any changes to the teams that you belong to. The teams are listed on Australia Project Teams.

If you've moved on to other things for the moment, that's absolutely fine. We'd appreciate if you'd let us know so that we can remove you from the membership list.

Over the past year, Australia Project members have been more active on Discord. We're finding it a fun way to communicate as a project. As you are already a member of the dedicated Australia Project server (WikiAustralia) where all our chat channels are located, we hope you'll join the chat! It's a great way to communicate with other members on your project team/s, or for any general questions.

We're always happy to receive any ideas or suggestions that you have to make our project even better.

Looking forward to hearing from you!

The Australia Project Leadership Team ~ Gillian, Margaret and Veronica

Hi Margaret. Still here. Still aiming to to work on a profile a day (but have fallen off the wagon this month - should be back on board next week). Still want to be part of Oz project as enjoying hearing what is going on and how to do things. Lauren
Thanks Lauren for responding to the check-in message, and for your ongoing contributions to WikiTree and the Australia Project, they are much appreciated!

Regards, Margaret

Hi Lauren,

It's time for the annual Australia Project membership checkin. Thank you so much for contributing to the project and Australian profiles on WikiTree during the last year. We really appreciate you!

If you would like to stay in the project, please reply to this message or send me a private message to let us know that you would like to stay on. Alternatively, if your WikiTree and research interests have moved away from Australia, please let us know and we can remove you from the membership list for the moment. You will, of course, be very welcome to rejoin the project down the track whenever you want to.

We are also keen to know if you want to make any changes to the team or teams that you want to focus on. Take a look on Australia Project Teams to see what teams there are to choose from. If you want to discuss this, or have any questions or suggestions about the Australia Project we'd love to hear your ideas.

Thanks for taking the time to get back to us!

Kind Regards Margaret Haining Membership Coordinator

Hi Margaret. Still very active in adding Australian Profiles. Whilst I haven't the time to contribute to the Oz team projects, I like being in the loop and seeing what you guys are discussing. Cheers, Lauren.

Hello Lauren,

I noticed that have been creating some Pre-1700 profiles. Please see this page on Pre-1700 Profiles and note the section 'Cite Reliable Sources'.

Thanks, Laura

Hi Laura

I hope I am doing them OK. I am entering some as parents with no sources and then going back to do the kidlets and do their bio and have it pick up the parents names, then go back to the parents and work on them. So you may have seen some of those that have no sources, but will be fixed this weekend. I've added a personal category to them so I can make sure I don't miss them. Lauren

Hi, Lauren,

I appreciate that you plan to source them soon. The guidelines for Pre-1700 state that you must never create a Pre-1700 profile without a reliable source. If you could at least add one source when you create the profile then go back and complete them that would be really great.

Thanks, Laura

Hi Lauren, when you create a new personal category, can you make sure you click on the red category at the bottom of the profile, add your main one Salisbury-2431 as the parent category, and "Save". I've fixed the 2 recent ones you created, have a look at this one in edit mode, https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Category:Salisbury-2431_Needs_research

Cheers, Margaret

Arrrghhh! Sorry. But seriously lost. I can't see the red category at the bottom of the profile. Maybe I am on the wrong screen?
No worries, no you won't see the red category now, because I fixed both the recent ones. Next time you create a new one, after you save on the profile, then go to the categories at the bottom of the profile and click on the new red one. That will bring up a box like https://www.wikitree.com/index.php?title=Category:Salisbury-2431_Needs_research&action=edit but it will be empty. Add the parent category you see in that one, then save the page.

I hope that makes sense, you don't need to do anything to the ones already existing, just follow those steps for the next one you do. Once you get the idea, it will seem easy.

Cheers, Margaret

Hello Lauren,

Thanks for taking the Pre-1700 Quiz!

Because pre-1700 ancestors are shared by many descendants, working with members of the projects which coordinate them is essential. You can learn more about joining the community in How To #3 and in the Project FAQ.

Use the Pre-1700 Projects list to find one which best fits your research focus. Review the project pages for special guidelines and to learn how to collaborate with the project members.

Let me know if you have trouble finding projects which fit your focus. Click my name, then ask in the comment section of my page.

Please take your time. Accuracy is so much more important than speed on WikiTree. Please do add locations, dates, and at least one reliable source to each profile, particularly any pre-1700s ones, before you leave it. (See: Pre-1700 Reliable Sources).

 :)

Hi, Lauren!

Welcome to the WikiTree family, your contributions will go a long way to joining the world together.

It is best to start with the New Member How-To pages, they will save you a lot of time and frustration. Have a look at our Sources page it is also helpful.

Thank you for adding your DNA to WikiTree. Getting the Best from DNA will tell you more about how DNA kits are used on WikiTree.

Thank you for adding a GEDCOM. The GEDCOM does not automatically populate your tree. It generates a GEDCOMpare report which you work through, either accepting or rejecting all suggested matches. Once that has been done, you should see [add] buttons for each of the remaining names.

The GEDCOMpare process guide has tips on how to use the data in your file most efficiently.

For those using Chrome, Opera, or Firefox browsers, there is a tool that can help with the formatting of profiles that have been created through GEDCOM, so that you can concentrate on the research. You can read more about it in the WikiTree AGC FAQ.

I am here to answer any question you have, no matter how trivial you may think it is. Please add as much information as you can, it all helps to turn a “name” back into a person. I hope you enjoy the site as much as I do.

See you in the branches.

Laura ~ WikiTree Greeter 🙂
