Note: which fits with age of 10 when father died[3][4][5][6]
Orphaned at a young age
When she was aged about 7 Margaret lost her mother Elizabeth shortly after giving birth to her young brother John followed by her father in a drowning accident when she was 9. On the same day as her father’s drowning her paternal grandfather collected the children & took them home to Castleton farm & cottages about 4 miles from North Berwick beside Tantallon Castle, from which it derives its name.
Childhood post-Crail
It’s known that her grandfather Richard was still alive in 1768 when the last surviving minute of the Widows & Orphans Fund is dated. Thereafter nothing is known of what lives the children had other than her siblings all lived to adulthood in the area & married locally.
Marriage
Whether Margaret married is the subject of unresolved research. She is one of two possible ‘candidates’ to have married Richard Whitecross. Refer to Richard wife’s profile for further detail.
Death
As it’s not known whether Margaret married it’s possible she died in early adulthood. She is last known of in 1768 when she was 12.
