This birthplace stands out as odd given the usual locations of our family at that time. On investigation I see there is a Saltcoats in East Lothian. For the moment I can't find evidence of a village, just a castle. But according to this link, it had extensive gardens so it looks more plausible as Williams birthplace? http://www.maybole.org/history/castles/saltcoats.htm

LATER EDIT - William's birthplace of Saltcoats was originally confused with the Saltcoats in Ayrshire but is now corrected to Haddingtonshire, where Saltcoats Castle & Gardens are/were.
