Walter was born on 1 August 1785 in Dunbar, East Lothian, Scotland. He was the son of Peter Runciman and Jane Smith.^[1][2][3]

Walter died at the age of 66 on 21 October 1851 in Dunbar, East Lothian, Scotland.^[4][5]

Transcr. of Innerwick entry shows: "Edinburgh Aug 23rd - Walter Runciman sailor and Marion Runciman of Innerwick parish were married irregularly by Joseph Robertson Minister. The said Marion Runciman having applied to get her marriage sustained and registered after rebuke: the same (illegible) was ordered and a certificate allowed her upon removal from the parish"

The Edinburgh entry however, for the same date, read: "Willm (sic) Runciman sailor & Marion Runciman Daughter of Thos Runciman Plewman Thorntonloch Gave up their Names for marriage Willm McKay & Alexr McKay"

Given the exact date Innerwick and Edinburgh, "Willm"'s occupation, William in Edinburgh just has to be Walter.^{[6][7][8][9][10][11]}

apparently the IGI (and OPR) entry dated 22 Apr reflects a proclamation, and the marriage did not take place "in consequence of Eliza Slight's first husband being supposed still alive".

Steve adds: on the day following, Walter & Elizabeth travelled to Lamberton Toll in England north of Berwick-on-Tweed, on the border with Scotland.

"The Lamberton Toll marriage of of Walter Runceman to Elizabeth Sligh took place on 23 April 1838. The Border Priest was Henry Collins, and witnesses were George Lumsden and Jane ...sley.

"Details are from the NDFHS publication, Irregular Border Marriages, Volume I, The Registers of Henry Collins: Marriages at Lamberton Toll 1833-1849, transcribed and introduced by Arthur Brack, and indexed by George Bell."^[12][13][14]

FreeCen clarifies by showing "son" Thomas as Thomas PORTER instead of RUNCIMAN, and so matches the 9 yr old with them in 1841, and gives "Maria 24 scholar" as Marion 6^[16][17]
