Biography

Judith was born the daughter of John Rowe and Rebecca (Brandon) his wife.

In her father's Will, which he made on 19 February 1584/5, ^[1] Judith, as well as her two sisters Elizabeth and Sara, is under 21 years of age.

In the Will of her grandfather, Robert Brandon, which was made 8 May 1591, ^[2] the three sisters are referred to as the "children of John Rowe late of Clapham, Beds., Esq., deceased and of (the said) Rebecca my daughter now the wife of Robert Keyes Esq." The three sisters are still all under 21 years of age.

Judith's first husband was Anthony Witherell (Weathehead/Wetherhall) and they had (at least) three children - John, Brandon and Rebecca. Anthony died before February 1611/2 which is when Judith married her second husband John Shoyswell, of Shoyswell Etchingham in Sussex, at St James Clerkenwell on 11 February 1611/2.^[3]

"Judith Shoyswell late the wife of John Shoyswell of Shoyswell, deceased" made her will on 9 January 1635/6. ^[4] In it she made mention of:- son Henry Shoiswell (her youngest son and under 21) grandchild Rebecca, who was under 21, and the daughter of Elizabeth Seale 'my eldest daughter deceased; grandchild Judith, who was under 21, and the daughter of Mr John Horsmanden 'my son in law'; daughter Grace; daughter Margaret; daughter Rebecca; Grace Horsmanden; my second son Brandon Witherell; son John Witherell (her eldest son) and his wife Margaret; son Roger Shoisewell (under 21 and the son and heir apparent of John Shoisewell); Reference is also made to property in St John Jerusalem that was left to her in the 'Will of the Right Worshipful Dame Rebecca Seckford my very good lady and mother deceased'; her 'former husband Anthony Witherell, gent, deceased'; and money which is owed to her by John Fleminge and [blank] Lyon. Probate was granted on 6 Feb 1635/6. Judith died in February 1636 and was buried at St Mary and St Nicholas, Etchingham on 3 February 1636.
