John Robson (II) Gunn was hanged by George Sinclair, Earl of Cathness, at Girnigoe Castle in 1586, in revenge for the defeat of the Caithness men at Altgown (also Known as Allt Camhna) by Clan Gunn. (see Wikipeda - Battle of Allt Camhna for a description of the battle.
His father was John MacRob, and his brothers were Alexander and George. (While Alexander was the elder son, John was the effective chief of this branch of the Gunns.) He married an illegitimate daughter of Adam Gordon[1]. Adam Gordon (c 1479 - 1538) was, by marriage, Earl of Sutherland. John's sons were John and Alexander[2].
Robert Gordon describes him as "John Mack-ean-Mack-rob"[3]. Since Iain/Ian is the traditional Scottish version of John, this presumably means "John, son of John, son of Rob."
