Biography

Research Notes

Lack of evidence for William being a son of Rhys ap Gruffydd and Catherine Howard:

The book written in 1993 Sir Rhys ap Thomas and His Family- A Study in the Wars of the Roses and Early Tudor Politics (by Ralph A. Griffiths, OBE, Emeritus Professor of Medieval History at Swansea University, Honorary Vice-President of the Royal Historical Society, and formerly Chairman of the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales. ) does not refer at all to a William ap Rhys, son of Rhys ap Grufydd.
The only mention of a William ap Rhys is as one of the illegitimate sons of Sir Rhys ap Thomas by Gwenllian, sister of the abbott of Talley. That William settled in Sandyhaven, Pembrokeshire.
The book draws on many early sources from Libraries and record offices. It also contains a reprint of the 17th century "Life of Sir Rhys ap Thomas" which is believed to have been written by Henry Rice, a descendant of Rhys ap Thomas. This has no mention of WIlliam ap Rhys.

Removed Rhys Ap Grufydd as father. No sources were found to support this being his son.

Rice-358 and Rhys-23 do not represent the same person because: Having proposed this match, Rhys-23 was merged with another profile and I believe that this now would create a huge conflation. Rhys-23 needs a sort out, and this profile may need to be used as a man he was conflated with.

Edit: as the merge rejection statement was ambiguous: Rice-358 (now under England Project management) will become the profile for William Rice, MP for Aylesbury. His surname is consistently spelled Rice, he had a wife named Barbara and no children. His will is transcribed here. This profile Rhys-23 will need further work after the details for Rice-358 have been extracted.

Rhys-23 and Rice-10904 appear to represent the same person because: Not sure why these were set to unmerged match as they clearly represent the same person. What will it take to complete this merge?

If his will said he had a wife named Barbara, that would give him a previously unknown third wife. This profile is for the Member of Parliament for Aylesbury and then Lancaster, under Queen Mary. It also names a wife Mary.

There is an old unmerged match hanging out there. I believe it was intended to merge away a non existent person. See https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Rice-358

Happy to set up the merge for this one, as there is no conflicting evidence. Jo

Edit: Merge proposed between Rice-358 and Rice-10904 to keep the LNAB the same

There is a comment on Rice-10904 that indicates that the William Rice/ap Rhys who married Mary Appleton was NOT the same man as he who married Thomasine Myal.

England project, two years later, I see no resolution of the issue about the wives. Just flagging this for you, thanks!

Hi Jillaine, as this was a reply to your own comment from 2019, it didn't feed into the England Project alerts. We will put it on the To Do list. However eyeballing the two profiles, this one has completely different wives to the other William Rice-10904 and he has children whereas the William Rice MP did not. If we were to merge the profiles, the two wives Mary and Thomasine would have to be detached.

I believe someone searched for a William Rice and picked up the info for William Ap Rhys. However, Ap Rhys never married a Mary Appleton. He married Thomasine Myal. So the only info that should be here is Mary Appleton. The dates belong to Ap Rhys.

I apologize for confusing the sources and conflating (comingling) the identities. Chock it up to a learning curve. I should have known there was source confusion; but, I didn't connect this profile to the parents. Feel free to reverse/delete text I added in Dec. Thank you for your help and patience.
Hi Jillaine and Sunny, the England Project will be taking on management of this profile as requested. Please contact me if you would like to discuss. Thanks!

Rice-1650 and Royce-224 are not ready to be merged because: These cannot be verified as being the same person. Much work has to be done first.
