A marriage register entry for the Parish of Haddington in the County of Haddington tells us that on Monday, May 9, 1870, at Campton, 26-year-old bachelor George Redpath, a farm servant, married 30-year-old spinster Janet Forbes after banns according to the forms of the Church of Scotland.
The register entry also informs us that groom George lived at Liberton, Edinburgh; his father was farm servant David Redpath and his mother was Agnes Redpath, formerly Manderson. Furthermore, bride Janet lived at Campton, Haddington; her father was farm servant Adam Forbes and her mother was Margaret Forbes, formerly Anderson.
Peter Dick, Mains Of Haddington, performed the ceremony, witnessed by Thomas Finlay and Mary M Forbes. The marriage was reported in Haddington on Saturday, June 11, 1870, to registrar Thomas Kemp.
The Scottish Census enumerated George on Sunday, April 2, 1871, in the County of Edinburgh, Registration District of Liberton, Enumeration District Number 5. According to his entry on Page 24, Schedule 120 of the archive, he was at Howdens Hall on the census night.
