John emigrated to Australia, on the ship "Mary", arriving in Hobart, Tasmania, on 19 Dec 1828. The ship's arrival was reported in the local newspaper The Hobart Town Courier (Tas. : 1827 - 1839) Sat 20 Dec 1828 Page 2 THE HOBART-TOWN COURIER.: [3]

Arrived yesterday the ship Mary, 368 tons, Capt. Shuttleworth, from London 7th July, St. Jago 21st August, with a large cargo of merchandize, rum, &c. and 53 passengers, vis—Mrs & 5 Myers. Messrs Samuda 2, Weston 3, Cotton 7, Lee 7, Poulton 3, Lovell 7, Rhode, Douglas, Mathieson, Pyke, White, Undershall, Murphy, Campbell, Skinner, Boucher 2, Cummings, Gow, Dove, Jinks (died at sea), Shaw, Gillum, Umphelby. This vessel encountered a severe storm off the Cape, and lost her foremast.

My father, wife, and 5 children landed in Hobart at the end of 1828, died 1882 The vessel had her foremast blown out off Cape of Good Hope, and she came jury rigged to Hobart. Sea-sick with six months of it, the sunny banks of the Derwent were so beautiful that they did not go on to New South Wales as intended Father and a fellow-passenger (John Tweed Pyke) looking where to locate grants, in the Midlands, took their first Christmas dinner in the tent of John Hilder Wedge in a honeysuckle scrub, where Wanstead House was afterwards built, some miles to the north of Campbell Town.

River Nile, lot 523, 920 acres.—Bounded on the north east by 113 chains 50 links along the south west boundary of a location to Henry Reed commencing at the River Nile and extending north westerly to lot 522, thence on the north west by 78 chains along lot 522 at a right angle with the last and extending south westerly to the north east boundary of a location to John Tweed Pyke, thence on the south west by 131 chains 30 links along John Tweed Pyke's location at a right angle with the last and extending south easterly to the River Nile, and thence on the south eastern side by the River Nile aforesaid to Henry Reed's location aforesaid, price five shillings per acre.

It would appear that things did not go well however for John, as he was apparently insolvent by 1845, according to the Launceston Advertiser (Tas. : 1829 - 1846) Fri 9 May 1845 Page 2 LAUNCESTON: FRIDAY EVENING, MAY 9, 1845.: [6]

INSOLVENT COURT, Wednesday, 7th May, 1845.— In re John Tweed Pyke : no appearance.
