Biography

This profile is part of the Pike Name Study.

Samuel was born in 1717, probably in Romsey Hampshire. The source for the place of birth is Wilson's Dissenting Churches Vol 2, 1808 which said ‘Ramsey, Wiltshire’ which may mean Ramsbury, Wiltshire, but more probably Romsey, Hampshire.

Samuel Pike, of Henly upon Thames, Oxford, married Susanna Smith, of St Peter's, Marlborough, Wiltshire on the 30th July 1745, at Preshute, Wiltshire, England.[1][2]
Notables Project
Samuel Pike is Notable.

Samuel Pike was educated at the Congregational Fund Academy, then Stepney Academy. His first settlement was at Henley-on-Thames, Oxfordshire, about 1740. He moved in 1747 as pastor at the Three Cranes meeting-house in Fruiterers Alley, Thames Street, London.

In 1757 he became acquainted with the views of Robert Sandeman, the son-in-law and disciple of John Glas, and began correspondence with Sandeman, then in Edinburgh, in 1758. Apparently a section of his church, came gradually into Sandeman's views; while others showed such dissatisfaction that he ceased further correspondence. He began, however, to adopt Glasite or Sandemanian usages, including a weekly communion.

He resigned his charge in 1765 and left the independents, becoming a member of the Sandemanian Church in Bull and Mouth Street, St Martin's Le Grand, London.

Samuel was a member of the Sandemanian Church
Samuel was admitted into membership of the London Sandemanian Church on the 22nd December 1765 according to the membership records. The records state that

Elder Ex Dec 15, 1769 Rest'd Feb 18 1770, rechosen Elder (which means he was excluded from the fellowship on 15 December 1769 and restored on 18th February 1770 and re-appointed as an elder. He was originally chosen as an "elder" on the 5th March 1766. His second ordination as Elder was on the 10th December 1771. In 1771 he moved to minister to a Sandemanian congregation at Trowbridge, Wiltshire. He published a number of works between 1748 and 1753.[3][4]

He is also included on the elders and deacons list as an Elder in 1769. See London Sandemanian Church Elders and Deacons list for the complete list [5].

A portrait of him, engraved by Hopwood is mentioned in the Catalogue of a Collection of Engraved Portraits, the Largest Ever Submitted to the Public.[6]

In 1766 his daughter Susannah married John Bedder, and Samuel was a witness. The family were probably living in Shoreditch.

The marriage register of St Leonard, Shoreditch, Hackney, recorded that John Bedder of St Mary Aldermary, London, Batchelor and Susanna Pike of this parish Spinster, married by licence on the 16th October 1766, witnessed by Samuel Pike and Elizabeth Carlteon.[7]

Samuel died in 1773 aged 56 and was buried at St James' Church, Trowbridge, WIltshire on the 10th January 1773.[8][9]
