Biography

Flag of Wiltshire (adopted 2009)
Katherine Pike was born in Wiltshire, England.
This profile is part of the Pike Name Study.

Catherine/Katherine Pike was the daughter of "Edmond Pike of Martin, Wiltshire" and his wife, Elizabeth Ashlock (daughter of Christopher Ashlock of co. Wiltshire). She was born about 1613 (based on her age in 1623, being 10) probably in Marten, or Great Bedwyn, Wiltshire. [1] (however, no baptism record has been located to date, Pike-5935 21 March 2024)

In 1615 Katherine was mentioned in her grandfather's will, "Edmunde Pyke of Merten (c.1541-1615), West Bedwyn, Wiltshire, gentleman" (dated 15 June 1615, proved 13 February 1615/16): [2]

- ... I Edmunde Pyke of Merton in the Parrishe of West Bedwyn in the Countye of Wiltes gent ...
- ... I give and bequeathe to everie one of my Sonne Edmond Pyke his children (vizt) Edmonde John Ellinor Marye Elizabeth Katherine and Bridgett Twenty pounde to each of them as a token and remembrance of mylove towardes everie one of them And either of the sayd Edmonde and John Pyke sonnes of my Sonne Edmonde Pyke to have the sayd some of Twenty pound or some profitte thereof accordinge to the discreacon of my executor whenas he shall and dothe attayne unto and accomplishe thage of Twenty and one yeares And everie of my sayd Sonne his daughters to have her sayd Some or porcon of Twenty pounds whenas shee shall and dothe attayne unto and accomplishe the age of eightene yeares or daye of her marriage wth the good and well lyking & consent & consent of hir Parents and accordinge to the discreacon of my executor or the proffitt and benefitt thereof ...

Research Notes

Note: Is Edmund Pyke of "Martin" or "Marton/Marten" ?

  • "Marton" or "Marten" was in West Bedwyn (now Great Bedwyn) in the Diocese of Sarum, and County of Wiltshire. (There is also a place named "Marten", located just 1.6 miles from Tidcombe, on the road to Great Bedwyn, which is 5.3 miles from Tidcombe, location)
  • "Martin" is a village and civil parish in the New Forest district of Hampshire, England (location). It was part of Wiltshire until 1895, located on the borders of Hampshire and Dorsetshire. It is 36 miles from Great Bedwyn, WIltshire.
Conclusion: It seems probable that the Pedigree above has a spelling error, and "Martin" should be "Marton/Marten", based on the following:
  • Katherine's grandfather's will (and his great-grandparents) refer specifically to the parish of West Bedwin, Wiltshire (now Great Bedwyn) - "Martin" is located 36 miles from Great Bedwyn
    • ... I Edmunde Pyke of Merton in the Parrishe of West Bedwyn in the Countye of Wiltes ...
  • Katherine's grandfather's will lists the names of all the same grandchildren as in the Pedigree above - so we know that there was only one person, not two different people (ie. "Edmond of Martin" and "Edmund of Marton"):
    • ... I give and bequeathe to everie one of my Sonne Edmond Pyke his children (vizt) Edmonde John Ellinor Marye Elizabeth Katherine and Bridgett
