Agnes Agnew Pettigrew was born on 6 September 1874 in Springburn, Lanarkshire, daughter of John Pettigrew and Margaret Drummond.[1]
Agnes and George Downie Blythe Cookston Hardie were married in the Hutchesontown district of Lanarkshire in 1909.[2] They married on 11 February in St Mungo Hall, South York St
The couple had one child:
After David's birth, the family moved to Cathcart where they lived in Benview Road.[4]
Agnes start as a shop worker and was later involved in the Shop Worker's Union. At the Glasgow Springburn by-election in 1937 caused by the death of her husband, she was elected as Member of Parliament (MP) for Glasgow Springburn, and held the seat until her retirement at the 1945 general election. On her election she was Glasgow's first female MP, the fifth female MP ever to be elected in Scotland and the second Scottish Labour MP, after Jennie Lee.
Agnes died on 24 March 1951, aged 76.[5]
