Daughter of James Lee and Euphemia Grieg, Jennie Lee was born in Fife, Scotland, in 1904.
She was educated at Cowdenbeath secondary school.
She graduated from the University of Edinburgh and worked as a teacher before entering politics.
She married Aneurin Bevan in 1934.[1]
Jennie was instrumental in the formation of the Open University during her time as Minister for the Arts.
She retired from politics in 1970 after being made Baroness Lee of Asheridge.
She died in 1988 of natural causes. She bequeathed her personal papers to the Open University.
