Aneurin Bevan was born on the 15th of November 1897 in Bedwellty, Monmouthshire, Wales. His parents were David Bevan and Phoebe (Prothero) Bevan.[1]
In 1911, at 13 years old he was a Coal Miner Hewer living with his parents and 6 siblings at Bedwellty, Monmouthshire, Wales.[2]
Nye Bevan became a Labour Party politician. As a former coal miner, Nye Bevan was a champion of social justice.
He married fellow MP Jennie Lee in 1934.[3][4]
The post-WW2 British Labour Party, acting on ideas in the 1942 cross-party report of Sir William Beveridge ( which among other things, called for a free national health service ) established the provision of free medical care for British citizens, regardless of their wealth. [5]The National Health Service Act of 1946 stated that it shall be the duty of the Minister of Health to promote the establishment of a health service to secure improvement in the physical and mental health of the people and the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of illness.The Act stated that the services should be free of charge.[6]
The new National Health Service's Minister of Health was Aneurin Bevan MP.
He died from stomach cancer, at home at Asheridge, on the 6th of July 1960 . His ashes were scattered on the hills above Tredegar. The Bevan Memorial Stones mark the spot, and were unveiled by Michael Foot in 1972.[7]
