He married Indiana E. Willis on Oct. 23, 1867 in Screven County, GA.
James died on July 4, 1924 in Bulloch County, GA and is buried in Corinth-Leefield Cemetery, Bulloch County, GA. His military stone reads "James M. Newton, CO. F, 5 GA CAV, CSA"
