Susannah was born about 1794 in West Hatch, Somerset. She was baptised[1] at St Andrew West Hatch on 23 Mar 1794 by her mother Jane Morgan who was not married at the time. She had a brother called James who was baptised[2] on 19 Jun 1796. He was also called a bass born child. On his baptism record the name Tucker was erased as the child's second forename.
On 30 March 1819 Susannah had a daughter in Beercrocombe. There was a bastardy order[3]against William Baker who was found to be responsible for the child. Transcript:
The Examination of Susannah Morgan of Beercrocombe in the said county, single woman, taken upon oath, before us two of His Majesty's Justices of the Peace, in and for the said County, this 30th Day of June in the Year of our Lord, one thousand eight hundred and nineteen who saith that on Friday the 30th Day of March last past at Beercrocombe aforesaid, she the said Susannah Morgan was delivered of a female Bastard Child and that the said Bastard Child is become chargeable to the said Parish of Beercrocombe and that William Baker of Ashill in the County aforesaid labourer did get her with Child of the said Bastard Child.
In a longer account of Susannah's examination it says that William Baker appeared before them and did not show any sufficient cause why he should not be adjudged the reputed father of the child.William Baker was ordered to pay one pound and ten shillings and six pence to the overseers of the parish of Beercrocombe. He also had to pay the further sum of thirteen shillings and six pence for the mainterance of the child and one shilling a week for as long as the child was chargeable to the parish. Susannah was also ordered to pay nine pence a week for as long as the child was chargeable to the parish if she could not nurse the child and take care of the child herself. Susannah and William did eventually marry but not until two years later.
Susannah Morgan married[4] William Baker on 9 Oct 1821 at Hatch Beauchamp, Somerset.
They had two sons: John in 1826 and Henry in 1828. Then four daughters Elizabeth, 1829, Sarah 1832, Mary 1833 and Susan 1835.
She passed away in 1872.
