Later generations also spelled the surname "Miller."
John Millar was born 11 Aug 1731 and baptised in the Episcopal Church in Muthill, Perthshire, Scotland. [1]
John Millar and Catherine McIvor were married about 1757 in Perthshire and had 3 children when they arrived at St. John's Island aboard the ship Falmouth from Greenock. She was born about 1735. [2]
Note: The Falmouth, Capt. John McWhae, departed Greenock in April 1770 with 60 passengers, mainly from Perthshire, and arrived In June 1770. "The group was taken to Lord Advocate James Montgomery's township at Stanhope. He employed David Lawson, an experienced flax farmer to run his plantation, using emigrants as indentured servants. The Falmouth passengers were recruited by Lawson and mainly shared his Perthshire origins." [3]
John and his family settled at Brackley Point.
Brackley Point being but a small congregation, they united with the Cove Head congregation and built a church below John Miller's at the Shore. The first minister that preached to us was Dr. McGregor. The first that settled among us was Mr. Pidgeon. Before this, services were held in Miller House, and C. Higgins, Point.[4]
W.E. Johnstone's "Life of Rev. Dr. John and Mrs. Geddie and Early Presbyterian History 1770-1845" mentions John Millar on page 4
