Biography
James was born about 1822, likely near Langholm, Scotland. He passed away in 1895 in Blandford Twp, Oxford Co., Ontario, Canada.
Son of Thomas Millar (b.1781, occupation: miller) and Marjory Hogg. The Millar's were from the Eskdalemuir/Langholm area of Scotland. James and his family were living in Langholm on the 1841 Scotland Census. James was living in Redruth, Cornwall, England in 1851 (occupation: draper). He married Grace Tresidder July 13, 1852 in Sithney, Cornwall.
They arrived in New York City from Liverpool on the ship "Ontario" on April 4th, 1857 with 3 children (Thomas, Ellen, Mary Ann, all born in Redruth, Cornwall, England). They were in Niagara Falls, Ontario by April 9th, 1857. Mary Ann (born in late 1855) passed away in 1861 and is the only child whose burial place is not known. They named their new daughter that year Mary Ann after her, but called her Annie.
