Robert (Bachelor, full age, Miner, of Slate Quarry, son of Thomas Metters, Sexton of Lew) married Mary Northcott (Spinster, School Mistress, of Slate Quarry, age 20, daughter of John Northcotte, Quarry Man) on 25 December 1839 in the parish church, Coryton, Devon, England. Witnesses were John Northcott and Charlotte Penrose.

In 1847 Robert, his wife, and 2 children (one born at sea) emigrated to Australia on the ship "David Malcolm", arriving in Port Adelaide on 23 March 1848 (departed Plymouth 21st December 1847).

Robert died on 8 February 1877, aged 58 years, in Redbanks, Port Gawler, South Australia. His son, John Northcott Matters, was listed on his death registration.

His death was reported in the Evening Journal (Adelaide, SA : 1869 - 1912), 1877, February 16, p. 2 (SECOND EDITION)[8]
MATTERS.—On the 8th February, at Redbanks, Robert Matters, after a lingering illness of four years and seven months, in his 58th year; a colonist of 29 years. Devonshire papers please copy.
He was buried at Two Wells Cemetery, Two Wells, District Council of Mallala, South Australia.
