Biography

Scottish flag
Ann (Meason) Mason was born in Scotland.

Ann was born about 1828 at Freswick, Caithness, Scotland[1][2][3]. She was the daughter of John Mason and Jessie Gibson.

In 1841 she was living at Hillhead of Papigoe, Wick, Caithness in a household with people ranging in age from Andrew Gipson (should this be Gibson?) (55), probably his wife Janet Gipson (50), Margaret Gibson (25) and Janet Gibson (24) and four males ranging in age from 15 to 9[4]. She was aged 13 and born in Caithness.

She married Robert McAdie on 21 April 1848 at Leith South, Midlothian[5]. They had at least three children.

  1. George (1851 - 1934)
  2. Jessie
  3. David Alexander (1861 - 1929)

In 1851 she was living at Yard Heads, 47, Leith, Midlothian with her husband Robert (a journeyman joiner aged 23) and two boarders - Benjamin Dunbar (an apprentice plumber aged 19 born at Wick) and Robert Morison (an apprentice joiner aged 17 born at Watten)[6][7].

Flag of Scotland
Ann (Meason) Mason migrated from Scotland to South Australia.
Flag of South Australia

She emigrated to Port Adelaide, South Australia on the Sultana leaving from London 24 April and Plymouth by 2 May and arriving on 8 August 1851[8]. A transcribed passenger list shows Robert McAdie (24 and a carpenter from Leith South and Caithness) with a 20-year-old Ann (maiden name Mason) and one-year-old George. As George was shown as a one-year-old grandchild with his grandparents in Wick, Caithness on 30 March 1851, the family must have had a quick dash down the country to leave. None of the other passengers listed are from Caithness, and Scottish families are decidedly in the minority.

Ann died on 19 March 1897 at Ararat, Victoria[9][10]. The death notice was published in the Ararat and Pleasant Creek Advertiser:

"M'Adie - On 19th march, Ann, the beloved wife of Robert M'Adie of Ararat, aged 69 years".

She was buried on 22 March 1897 at Ararat, Victoria.

Research Notes

Noel McAdie advises that he is sure her surname is MEASON although son David's birth shows it as MacCasson and his marriage as Mason.

L Henderson believes that Robert Morison in the 1851 Scotland census is actually Robert Manson, joiner as she hasn't been able to find Robert anywhere else. This is especially as he later married in Edinburgh and is first cousin to Robert McAdie.
