Biography

Joseph was born on 4 March 1840 in Frampton Township, Beauce County, District of Quebec, Lower Canada. He was the son of Robert McNeely, who was a Farmer, and Jane (Watson) McNeely. Witnesses to his baptism 21 June 1840 were Joseph McNeely and Eliza Watson. [1]

At the time of the 1861 Census, he resided with his parents and six of his siblings in Buckland, Dorchester, Canada East. [2]

By 1871, Joseph's family had moved to an area within a Census Sub-District called Harrington/Arundel/De Salaberry/Grandison in Argenteuil District, Province of Quebec, where he, two of his brothers, and his father were Farmers. [3]

Joseph emigrated to the United States in December 1879, entering the country at Port Huron, Michigan. His naturalization was on 5 September 1890 at the Circuit Court of Door County, Wisconsin. [4]

The 1880 Census recorded that Joseph was married and living in Sevastopol, Door County, Wisconsin. He and his wife Annie, both born in Canada, had a son who had not yet been given a name, born May 1880 in Wisconsin. [5]

The family continued to reside in Sevastopol in 1885 and 1895. [6] [7]

By 1905, Joseph and his family had moved to Sturgeon Bay, Door County, where Joseph was a Stonemason. [8]

Joseph died in Sturgeon Bay on 23 June 1906 at the age of 66. His occupation was recorded as Lumberman. [9] [10]

Research Notes

Joseph's Birth Place has been entered as Frampton, Beauce, Lower Canada on the basis of his Baptismal Certificate, even though Frampton Township was officially in the adjacent Dorchester County (rather than Beauce County), according to WikiTree suggestions.

Based on the year of birth of their first-born child in the 1880 Census, the date of Joseph's marriage to Ann has been entered as "before 1880", in the absence of precise information.
