Research Notes

Two Samuels or one?

There are two marriages for a Samuel Junkin indexed on ScotlandsPeople in reasonably quick succession in Kincardine, Perthshire. As Samuel isn't a common name in this area and time I ( Lorna) wondered whether they were they one and the same person?

We'll likely never know what the story is behind the entries.

Both "marriages" are on the same OPR page.

The one to Janet Henderson supposedly on 11 May 1751 ^[5]

The second to Jean Buchanan on 30 Jan 1752.^[6]

But all is not as it seems.

The Janet Henderson 11 May 1751 banns entry shows Janet as in Dunblane parish (Samuel in "this", ie Kincardine) but where a marriage date usually follows it shows "deserted" - as it also does for two others on the same page which contains some 31 banns over a year and a half.

Looking in the Dunblane Kirk Sessions it appears they got as far as the 3rd proclamation.^[7]

There can't be too many Samuel Junkins in the neighbourhood around this time and my current working assumption is that he was not too heartbroken and went on to marry Jean instead.

Which leaves the question of which Samuel?

Is he the Samuel baptized 1709 to William Junkine and Janet McGoun, or an undocumented son of his or ....
