OBITUARY.
MRS. SUSANAH ROSE.
The late Mrs. Susanah Rose, whose death at Bellingen occurred on April 2, was born on the Williams River, N.S.W., 88 years ago. She was the third daughter of the late Benjamin and Ann Joyce (nee Trotter) in a family of fourteen, of which two sons and six daughters are still living, Mrs. A. Beattie, of Kimbriki, is in her 92nd year, and she is able to get about and enloy life. Other sisters are Mesdames W. and S. McPherson, of the Manning River; Mrs. T. Richardson, Mrs. F. Blanch, of Port Macquarie; and Mrs. J. Kennedy, of Comboyne.
The surviving brothers are Messrs Thomas and Edwin Joyce, while Francis, Benjamin, Samuel and George predeceased their sister.
While Mrs. Rose was yet young the family moved to Bo Bo Creek, on the Manning River, and, it was there she married James Rose on May 10, 1866. Mr. Rose passed away just over three years ago.
After their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Rose took up land on Rawdon Island, Hastings River, and afterwards, with a family of six children, made their way to the Bellinger and settled at 'Forest Lodge,' the property three miles above Bellingen on the northern bank of the river. Locomotion in those days was mostly by horse back or walking, and access could only be had by cutting a way through thick scrub and heavy timber.
After housing in a pioneer's hut for a brief period the present more commodious dwelling was erected, and it was there that Mr. and Mrs. Rose were privileged to see their eleven children reared to manhood and woman hood.
Messrs. Benjamin, Francis Allen, George, with Annie (Mrs. Nelson) and Sophie Rose are still in the district; while Mr. Percival Rose has made his home at Wyong: Mr. Edwin Rose at Tamworth; Mr. Leonard Rose at Hurstville; and the youngest sister Aze (Mrs. Pomroy) lives at Brisbane. One daughter, Maud (Mrs. C. Moody), predeceased her parents. [6]
