Biography
Maggie Pearl Johnson was born 2 December 1893 in Georgia. Her parents were Ebenezer Irwin Johnson and Susan Hair. She had at least 6 siblings. Pearl's family primarily lived in the South Georgia-North Florida area, though sometime between 1910 and 1913 they lived in Turner County, Georgia where Pearl met her future husband.
Pearl married Herman Mitchell in Turner County, Georgia in 1913. According to family lore, Pearl and Herman met at Liberty Wesleyan Church in Ashburn, where their families were attending. The Johnsons moved to Florida and Herman, having already fallen in love, soon traveled there to bring Pearl back so they could marry. Pearl and Herman had 10 children: WIlliam Floyd, Ruth Leona, Roy Harvey, Allene, Joseph Elmer, Beatrice, WIlliam Thomas, Marjorie Lucille, George Herman, Jr and Franklin Delano. They lived primarily in Turner County, and a few years in Worth County, where they farmed, growing corn, cotton and peanuts and raising hogs, cows and chickens. [1]
Pearl became ill and passed away from cancer in 1939.[2] She was only 45 and still had young children at home. Pearl was buried in New Prospect Cemetery in Ashburn.[3] George, who remarried to a fine woman who was a good second mother to their children, is buried next to his beloved Pearl.[4]
