Life History

I was born in Auckland on 10 August 1952, first child of Lorraine Hahn and Edgar James Hylton. I lived there until I was 12 where I attended Kelston Primary and Avondale Intermediate in Auckland, New Zealand. When the family moved to Hamilton, I attended Hamilton Girls High School which I did not enjoy. I had several close friends from Auckland who are still friends today (2023) - Annette Miller, Jenny McKenzie and Robyn Bunce. We had a brilliant childhood as often children of the fifties in New Zealand did with lots of outdoor play and not a care in the world.

Nursing Career spanning 48 years

In 1970 I started nursing at Waikato Hospital, Hamilton, New Zealand when you learnt 'on the job' and worked 6 days a week. I didn't care what I got paid, I just loved it. It was my only career although when the girls were young, I stopped briefly to waitress at the local hotel in Otorohanga in the evenings. I was a registered nurse for 48 years but retired in 2017 to enjoy more free time and my grandsons, whom I look after when required. Despite doing 'in house' training in 1970 to 1973, I did correspondence at home to achieve a Bachelor of Nursing graduating in 1998. Greg and I travelled to Palmerston North for the graduation ceremony. I started Nursing on the 9 February 1970 and completed my nursing training on 22 April 1973. When I started, we worked 6 days a week in the hospital. It was a sharp learning curve for a 17 year old. The nursing roles I had were:

  • General nurse
  • Cardiac and Intensive care nurse (3 y)
  • Public Health nurse (5 years)
  • District nurse (8 years)
  • Prison nurse (10 and a half years)
  • Practice Nurse (10 Years)

During my nursing career, I did a Future Leaders course through Corrections, a member of the Clinical Advisory Group through Community Midlands Health Network.

Marriage

Greg Hunt and I were engaged on 24 October 1974 and Married on 31 May 1975 at the Waikato Hospital Chapel, Hamilton (since pulled down). We lived the first two years of our marriage in Palmerston North and had many good friends. We then moved to Otorohanga and Greg began working for his father. I never thought we would stay there but we lived there for 39 years; firstly, in our first home that my brother, Jeff, built, then at a lifestyle block along the same road - 269 Old Te Kuiti Road, Otorohanga, for another 10 years before we built a new home with our daughter Loren George and son in law, Adam George at Pokuru, Te Awamutu, Waipa, New Zealand. I love gardening, crafts, art and am a committed Christian in my church and in my community. I am living through the Covid pandemic from 2019. I was always heavily involved in community activities - I held a public meeting to start a Parents Centre in Otorohanga as I felt there wasn't enough parent education in town. A steering committee was set up in 1987 and in 1988, Otorohanga Parents Centre was affiliated. At the time, I was running Antenatal classes for the Centre. I received an Honorary Life Membership in 1991. When I finished at Waikato Hospital in 1975, Matron wrote, "A most conscientious and reliable nurse who has a great insight into the individual needs of her patients. she has established and maintained good interpersonal relationships, her health was good and she demonstrated a great loyalty to her profession". I started at Palmerston North Hospital in February 1975, three months before our marriage in May. On my reference, when I left in 1978, the ICU specialist wrote, "Throughout the time Denise has been here, she has been a willing and enthusiastic worker who was particularly noted for her enthusiasm with long term head injuries. She has a very cheerful disposition and this has made it more easy for her to remain optimistic in what is often seemed an almost impossible medical situation. She is very popular with Medical and Nursing Staff and I am sure she would acquit herself well in any future position". G. M. Kirk (MRCP, FRACP, Physican in Charge). I was Chairperson of the Otorohanga South School board for about three years around 1997. The principal wrote this, "Denise is forthright, honest and has empathy with the problems of others. This talent has made her a very popular Chairperson who people are willing to approach. Confidentality is important to Denise and this helps to ensure that all matters are addressed professionally". You may ask why I have included all this; it is certainly not to say how great am I but I have forgotten most of this praise and it says something about who I am to others so when generations read this after my death, they can say, that's who she was.

Genealogy Research

I have researched several lines of family since the 1980's. I had to leave it while raising children but now back into it developing genealogy/heritage pages of all my information for the next generations. I am hoping they will appreciate the work that has gone into it and keep the albums!! My list of names is as follows : Alden, Hunt, Hahn, Sinclair, Earl, Nielson (Nilson, Nielson) - who knows! (Norway), George (Wales), Shepherd and Nightingale ( Kent), Davidson, Duncan, Urquhart, Coventry.

Digital afterlife statement: When I have become unable to continue my work here on WikiTree, through physical or mental illness, or die, I do not want any of my Profiles deleted. I give permission for the Profiles I am Profile Manager of, to be transferred to one of my family members, any of the other wonderful WikiTreers who have collaborated with me, or WikiTree admin - the best distribution for each Profile to be determined at the time. Dear Denise,

The Profile Improvement Project (PIP) is performing a check-in with project members. Please review the following and respond to let us know that you are content with your current team or if you would like to be more involved.

The Project operates in a team structure. There are currently three participant PIP Teams -- The Maintenance Category Team, the Unknowns Team, and the Biography Team. There is also the Voyage Team which guides new Voyagers. See the Profile Improvement Project Teams for a brief outline of each team.

There are currently three different Biography Teams - The Biography Team, the Abandoned Team, and the Popular Team.

You're currently identified as a member of the Biography Team. The Biography Team works on profiles from their watchlist and other profiles that interest them. You're also a member of the Voyage Team - thank you very much for all your work there.

If you have not already done so, we invite you to join the email GoogleGroup. We use the WikiTree Discord server #profile-improvement channel for our project. Neither is required; we also use the Profile_Improvement tag in G2G for Project announcements.

We thank you for all you do to help the Profile Improvement Project meet its goals. We would like to hear about the successes you’ve had and would also appreciate any feedback you have to help improve the Project. Please share your thoughts in a reply to this comment or via private message to one of us.

I enjoy my work on the Voyagers team although I have become quite firm in what I require from the Voyagers in communication. I spend many hours sourcing and working on suggestions in Scotland and England and I prefer to work with voyagers with those profiles including Australia and New Zealand. I am happy to be on any team that requires more help.

Hi Denise, I have a small problem with Connection Finder which I don't know how to solve and obviously need some help.

For instance in the latest one it suggests I am 20 degrees from Johnny Cash. When I look at how this was arrived at I find there is an error. If you look at No. 17 William Roberts born 20 Dec 1844, his father is Henry Roberts, not George. This has occurred numerous times in this section. Can you please suggest a way to correct this? Thanks, Ellen (Roberts) McDonald

So sorry Ellen. Have only just seen your message. https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Connection_Finder. I was trying to find the person who created it. I thought you could contact them but the best idea is to put your concern into the G2G forum and it will be picked up there.

So sorry Ian, have only just seen this. I rarely look at my own profile! LOL. I am torn 50/50 between Scotland and England with New Zealand trailing as a poor third. I am 94% United Kingdom DNA so I cannot take sides! but am definitely a Kiwi (NZer) through and through. I am currently a guide for the PIP journal but there are few with English and Scottish ancestors doing it. I have been invited to be a Tartan Trail guide as well so I may concentrate on that when I get started. Meantime, I have been doing Part Two of the Orphan Trail in England and foolishly, but most interestingly, adopted all the Nightingale Baronets who need mountains of work. I have just finished Nightingale-931 as my third profile and have learnt a lot! I am supposed to be in the Surrey group but really concentrate on whatever profiles fall my way. So 50/50 priority at the moment. Cheers, Denise

It's time for our annual Scotland Project check-in!

This year we are hoping to learn what our membership would like to accomplish over the next 12 months.

In case you aren't aware, this year is WikiTree's ""Year of Connections"" and the Project's leadership would like to contribute to this in as many ways as possible.

We would appreciate it if you would share your thoughts and ideas with us on how we can accomplish this goal. We would also appreciate it if you would provide some feedback on our existing goals, including:

  • If you have not yet signed up to help on one of the project's teams, which team(s) would you be interested in joining?
  • How often should we provide a Project Newsletter?
  • Have you participated in the Tartan Trail? If not, is this something you'd be interested in doing?
  • Do you have a question(s) that we could add to a Frequently Asked Questions page?
  • Any suggestions or ideas you have on ways to improve the Scotland Project in general

We continue to communicate with our Project members via Google Group (official) and Discord (unofficial), as well as G2G. You may also reach out to any of the Project leaders via WikiTree's internal messaging system at any time.

Thank you for all you do to help the Scotland Project become a knowledge hub for Scottish genealogical research! We wish you all the best in 2022!

Hello

It’s time for a Project check-in!

Scotland Project Leaders check in with you at least once a year to see how you are doing. With the changes happening around the world, we understand that life is hectic right now.

What are you planning to work on for the Scotland Project this year? Are you happy with the team(s) you part of, or would you like to make some changes?

This time round, we’re also looking for feedback on the use of Google Group and Discord. Do you use one or both of these? If you don’t use either of them, what is the best way to ensure you receive Project communications? If you would like to join us on Google Group or Discord, let us know in your response.

Hi Denise

Thank you for adding your DNA Test information to your profile on WikiTree. Your information will be propagated to the profiles of your parents and your ancestors within about 24 hours of being added. It will also propagate to the profiles of the descendants of your ancestors, so they may see your information under the heading "DNA Connections" just as you can see theirs.

Getting started with DNA outlines how to proceed to use your DNA test information on WikiTree and DNA is a link to a collection of links about WikiTree's many features involving DNA.

The DNA Connections list on your profile will provide a visual way for you to find potential relatives on WikiTree who have also added their DNA test information. Using DNA tools at sites like GEDMatch.com, if you find a relative that matches your DNA sufficiently and you have genealogical sources for the intermediate relationships, you can mark the specific parental relationships back to the most recent ancestor that you both share as "confirmed with DNA." For details, guidance, and examples of how to properly document DNA confirmations, see DNA confirmation.

To find other potential relatives, continue adding sourced profiles for other lines until you can connect on all branches. The more branches you are able to add the greater the likelihood of finding potential cousins to match with. The process of identifying which branch elements of DNA relate to will better enable you to find matches that relate to the particular branches you are researching.

Have fun!

Hi Denise

Thanks for taking the Pre-1700 Quiz!

Pre-1700 ancestors can be shared by many descendants, so collaboration is essential. You can learn more about joining the community in How To #3 and in the Project FAQ.

The England and Scotland Projects may fit your research focus. If not, use the Pre-1700 Projects list to find other possibilities. Review the project page to learn about resources and guidelines as well as how to collaborate with the project members.

Have questions? Let me know by using the "reply" link under my comments or by clicking my name to visit my profile. From there you can leave a comment or send a private message.
