Biography

From his death record William's parents were Robert Hutton, a joiner, and Janet Henderson.

In his marriage record he and Elisabeth are recorded as both being "parishioners" in Kincardine. In the baptism record of his son William the place of his birth is given as Kirk Lane. The Perthshire Ordnance Survet Name Books - 1858-62 record Kirk Lane as being "A Statute Labor Road extending from the Stirling & Callander, Trust Road, southwards to within about ¾ of a mile of the River Forth It consists of numerous pendicles and farms The Property of H H Drummond Esqr." [1] (A pendicle is "a piece of land or property forming a subsidiary to an estate" Collins Dictionary)

In the 1841 census the family is in Kirk Lane, Kincardine (Perth), Perthshire. William's occupation follows that of his father Robert. He is a wright (carpenter or joiner). All the children so far recorded as born (i.e. not Margaret) are with them. (Find My Past - 1841 census [2])

In the 1851 census the family are still at Kirk Lane, Kincardine (Perth), Monteith, Perthshire but William is now described as a farmer of 53 and a half acres. Only their sons Duncan, 18, William, 14, scholar and John, 12, scholar are with them. (Find My Past 1851 census [3]) Robert and James had both gone to Stirling where Robert was working as coachbuilder in Stirling and James as a goldsmith. (See their profiles.)

William died where he had lived all his farming life, in Kirk Lane, Kincardine. He had outlived Elisabeth and died after two years of 'general debility' His death was registered by his son Robert, who came from Glasgow to do so.
