Biography

Effie (Hunter) Bain has Scottish Ancestors.

Euphemia "Effie", was born about 1854 in the village of Hamburg, Waterloo, Ontario. She was the daughter of William Hunter and Nicolena Hastings.^[1][2]

She was 24 yrs. old, never married, and living with her parents in Guelph, Wellington, Ontario when she married Donald James Bain there in 1878. Donald was a 26 yr. old Scottish bachelor living in Paisley, Bruce, Ontario and working as a Chemist. They were both of Presbyterian faith. Witnesses at the wedding were Hugh McDonald of Paisley and Bella Hunter of Guelph.^[3] Effie and D. "James" lived in Paisley from then on where her husband worked as a Chemist/Druggist and they raised eight children. ^{[4] [5]} Tragically, she lost one son in the war, and four children to illnesses at young ages. Her husband passed away in 1898. Effie took in a lodger to help with the finances.^[6] In 1915 Effie was living in Hamilton as noted by her son Donald's military records.^[7] In the 1921 census she was 67 yrs. old and living in Hamilton with her widowed daughter Alice Sinclair, her grandson Glen, and 2 lodgers.^[8]

Effie is believed to have passed away about 1935 and is buried in Paisley Cemetery in Bruce, Ontario. (There is a cenotaph with the names of her son William H Bain, Effie Bain herself, and her son Donald J Bain. Her son Donald is actually buried in France as he passed away in the war).^[9][10]
