Mary (Hope) Maugham was born in County Durham, England.

Mary Hope was born in 1820 and was the youngest daughter of Robert Tate Hope and Mary Manners.


Mary married Martin Maugham in Houghton-le-Spring on 24 April 1841 and they had eight children.[1]

  4. Elizabeth Maugham (1850–?)
  5. William Maugham (1854–1925)
  6. Peter Maugham (1855–1924)

On the 1841 census, Martin, a coal miner, and Mary are living in Newbottle, Houghton le Spring.[2]

On the 1851 census, Martin, a coal miner, and Mary are living in Trimdon with their children: Mary Ann (9 years), Robert (7 years), John (5 years) and Elizabeth (1 year). Mary's widowed mother is also living with them.[3]

On the 1861 census, Martin, a coal miner, and Mary are living in the village of Middlestone, Bishop Auckland, with their children: William (7 years), Peter (5 years), Ralph (4 years) and Thomas (8 months). Their second son, John, died in 1851.[4]

On the 1871 census, Martin, a coal miner, and Mary are living in the town of South Church, Bishop Auckland, with their children: Peter (15 years) and Ralph (14 years). Their youngest son, Thomas, died in 1862, aged 2 years.[5]

On the 1881 census, Martin, a coal miner, and Mary are living in Cassop.[6]

On the 1891 census, Mary, a widow, is living in the village of Merrington.[7]

Mary Hope died, aged 76 years, in 1896.[8]
