Known as "The Ettrick Shepherd," James Hogg was the son of Robert Wallace Hogg and Margaret (Laidlaw) Hogg. He was born towards the end of 1770 in Ettrick, Selkirkshire, Scotland. He was baptized on December 9, 1770, but the records from the Old Parrish Register for Ettrick, county of Selkirk, do not include the date of birth. [1] James had only 6 months of education when his father had to file bankruptcy. He worked as a cow herder and then a shepherd. [2]
In his mid thirties when living near Thornhill he fathered two girls from two different women.
James married Margaret (Phillips) Hogg in Kelso, Roxburghshire, Scotland, United Kingdom, on April 26, 1820. [3] Camp-4114 03:23, 31 May 2021 (UTC)
The couple had a number of children. Except for 1827, at least between the years 1821-31 the family were living at Altrieve Lake, Yarrow parish. In 1827 they were living at Mountbenger.
James died on November 21, 1835.[4]
