Biography

William was born about 1730, maybe 1735, perhaps in South Carolina.[citation needed]

He married more than once - lastly to Lydia White, by whom he had two children: Eliza and Louvisa.[1]

William died before 10 January 1810, when an inventory of the estate of William Hill, "late of Randolph County" was recorded.[2][3]

Lydia, William's widow, married Isaac Hill before 5 March 1813, when the report for the estate of William Hill for 1812 (5 January 1812 - 5 March 1813) was submitted by "Isaac Hill in right of his wife Lydia Hill".[4][5]

Isaac and Lydia moved to Warren County, Tennessee. She died 12 June 1838.[6]

Research Notes

Researcher Joyce Rogers has documented estate papers which helps identify his children.[7]

His Find a Grave memorial gives him three wives: "first wife was Charity Lewis, 3 children, Richard, Lewis, and Sion. Second Marriage Elizabeth Clanton children are: Jane, James A. Hill, Elizabeth "Betsy" Hill, & Mary Lovice Hill. 3rd marriage William married Lydia White Jones, widow of Hugh Jones abt 1798. Their children are: Eliza Hill & Louisa Hill." As of 12 January 2024, the memorial has oodles of information from primary records (perhaps not all about him), but nothing to support either "Charity Lewis" or "Elizabeth Clanton" as a wife.[8]

The following list of web sources previously posted as research notes has been updated and annotated.

Comments

A comment on this profile (Hill-7390) from Susan Reed of WikiTree, 10 January 2024, stated that she had information on William Hill, adding "I do not know if this information is accurate. The document was given to me many years ago." The information, from "The Hill Family of Beersheba Springs, Tennessee", contributed by Ralph H Willis from Warren County Genealogical Association, Vol II, No 2 written in 1993,[10] listed the following children - all born in Chatham County, North Carolina - for William Hill and Elizabeth Clanton:

  1. William Clanton Hill, b. 1757 d. 1803 in Halifax County, NC. Married Sarah Unknown
  2. Herbert Hill, b. 1759
  3. Richard Hill, b. 1761, land deed 1790 in Franklin County, NC
  4. Henry Hill, b 1763, land deed Jan 1, 1801, witness Enoch Hill
  5. Enoch Hill, b. 1765
  6. James Hill, b. 1769, married Christiana Lassiter Sep 15, 1806
  7. Elizabeth Hill, b. Feb 17,1785 d. July 14, 1852 in Carroll County, Georgia, married Benjamin Lassiter May 5, 1801 in Greene County, Georgia
  8. Sion Lassiter Hill, b, Feb 3 1796 d. August 21,1871 in Dale County, Alabama
  9. Isaac Abner Hill, b. April 5, 1800 d. August 31, 1833 in Harris County, Georgia, married Isoble Cos on Nov 21, 1822

A comment on this profile (Hill-7390) from Liz Shifflett of WikiTree, 12 January 2024, included the following information from the profile for Eliza Hill (1800-1859),[11] William and Lydia's daughter:

"This William Hill is thought by many to have been the William Hill 4/, of Chatham County, N.C. who was a son of Robert Hill 3/ of Halifax County, N.C. It was William (Clanton?) Hill Sr. 4/, who came to Hancock County, Georgia ca. 1802 from Chatham County, N.C. After a further review of land deeds in Chatham County, N.C. it is obvious that it was not William (Clanton?) Hill Sr. 4/ that married Lydia White Jones because land deeds in Chatham County, N.C. shows that while William Hill 1/ & his wife Lydia White Jones were having their two daughters in 1800 and 1802 in Georgia, William (Clanton?) Hill Sr. 4/ was still living in Chatham County, N.C."[11][12]

The year in the image is difficult to read, but someone has written at the top of the page "1826" - which does not mesh with Eliza and Lovice's birth years, thought to be 1800 and 1802 (they would not have needed a guardian in 1826 unless they were under 21... so born 1805 or later).

no reply to this comment or objection to proposal in first reply... I made changes on the assumption that the William who was son of Robert & Tabitha and married Elizabeth Clanton is Hill-27096 & this William, a different man, was married to Lydia White...

should this profile be for the William of NC who married Elizabeth Clanton or for the William of [probably] SC who married Lydia (White) Jones?

my recent edits to the profile assume that it was intended to be for the William Hill who died, leaving Lydia again a widow. In which case, he should not have birth in NC in 1735, nor be the son of Robert and Tabitha (Green) Hill. Children are a bit confused too, but I do not believe that the William who married Lydia was the father of William Clanton Hill (so both of those profiles would also need to be detached).

If the profile managers have no objection, I propose changing the birth location for this William to South Carolina (uncertain) and detaching his profile from

Support for Elizabeth m Lasseter and Mary m Cochran being siblings is found in the record for the Lasseter Cemetery in Carroll County, Georgia<ref>Chattahoochee Hills Historical Society: Lassetter Cemetery. Canvasser: Laurie Searle (03/07/09).</ref>

"Benjamin and Elizabeth Lassetter received this land in a 200-acre land grant. They lived in a log cabin located across from the cemetery on the left side of the road. This cabin overlooked the Chattahoochee River, which they crossed by Hutcheson’s Ferry....
"The two box tombs shown above are believed to be the graves of Cheadle Cochran (b. 1786-1790, d. 27 Nov. 1878) and his wife Mary, who was the sister of Elizabeth Lassetter (Hill).
"Jesse Boon, son-in-law of Benjamin Lassetter, is buried in the tall monument (#1), which also lists Nancy Boon (Lassetter), wife of Jesse.
"Elizabeth Lassetter (b. 02/17/1785, d. 07/14/1852) is believed to be buried in a box tomb (#6).
"Benjamin Lassetter (b. 12/12/1778, d. 08/23/1869) may be buried in St. Paul Methodist Church Cemetery, Whitesburg, GA.

Jasper County Court records having to do with William Hill's estate - some filed by Lydia, later by Speer - include one that mentions Isaac, Lydian, Lasseter & Cochran:

Book C page 111, 1812 Yearly Returns M. Speer
To John Shackleford for making tittles
Paid C. Cochran
Paid B. Lassetter
Sale of Real Estate Lot 29 Isaac Hill Isaac ofr Lydia ....
from his Find a Grave memorial, which seems to have information about more than one William (as of this date)

the records also name Charles Murry (Avarilla Jones's husband) - see this FamilySearch image, page 415 of 1014 in Georgia Probate records.

According to a document called "The Hill Family of Beersheba Springs, Tennessee", contributed by Ralph H. Willis for the WCGA, Warren County Genealogical Association, Volume II, No.2 written in 1993, William Hill and Elizabeth Clanton had the following children all born in Chatham County, North Carolina:

William Clanton Hill, born 1757, died 1803 in Halifax County, North Carolina, married Sarah Unknown. Herbert Hill, b. 1759 Richard Hill, b. 1761, land deed 1790 Franklin County, North Carolina. Henry Hill, b. 1763, land deed January 1, 1801, witness Enoch Hill. Enoch Hill, b. 1765 James Hill, b. 1769, married Christianna Lassiter September 15, 1806. Elizabeth Hill, b. February 17, 1785, d. July 14, 1852 in Carroll County, Georgia, married Benjamin Lassiter May 5, 1801 in Greene County, Georgia. Sion Lassiter Hill, b. February 3, 1796, d. August 21, 1871 in Dale County, Alabama. Isaac Abner Hill, b. April 5, 1800, d. August 31, 1833 in Harris County, Georgia, married Isoble Cos November 21, 1822.

I do not know if this information is accurate. The document was given to me many years ago.

Hill-19314 and Hill-7390 appear to represent the same person because: I think Hill-7390 may be in error about one marriage and birth state and some children but other marriages and children I agree with and he did die in Georgia.

U.S. and International Marriage Records, 1560-1900, show that William Hill and Elizabeth Clanton was married

in 1771• Halifax, Halifax, NC. And they had a child Mary Lovice Hill in 1789, So I did not make a new profile it would have been the same as Hill-7390.

Hill-27096 and Hill-7390 appear to represent the same person because: could y'all take a look? Hill-7390, based on names of children, is more solidly a son of Robert & Tabitha. Please add any other sources you may have to these profiles. If no support for William with a daughter Winifred married King being their daughter, I think he (Hill-27096) should be detached as son of Robert & Tabitha.

P.S. I'll be postponing this proposed merge in a sec... I don't want it to receive default approval/get merged without further research and/or discussion.
